Im restoring, and was reading how to restore a drum again. I came accross this part and would like to know more about this. My sonor lugs didnt have this and none of the drums I have restored have had this. Is this necessary, and excatly how do i do this? from the "How to restore a drum"

Internal Felt:

I usually leave it alone, if the lug does not have internal felt then you can pack it with a cotton ball (if that's all you have) or go get some heavy felt at the fabric store. Cut it in little rectangles so that it wraps around the spring

I have some heavy felt, do I need to wrap the spring in the lug with felt?

Yes Poppy -you can wrap it- I use cotton balls in there myself but have even used paper towel when I had nothing else on hand. ALmost no one will ever see it so anything is ok if it stops the rattle buzz.

Avoid using some types of foam. DW put small dark foam pads in lugs during their early years. The stuff deteriorates, crumbles, and sticks to the springs and internal parts becoming useless and messy.

I'm not sure if DW is still using foam to prevent spring buzzing and rattling.

I use those makeup apply/remove pieces. They are cotton and thinner with a quilted texture. If you cut it in half, it fits a lug just about perfect. It's easier to work with than cotton balls.

Ok it all makes sense now. I didn't know what purpose the felt served. Do I just place a piece behind the spring or wrap the spring?

The effect is about the same, depending on the lugs. Wrapping is more complete, but if the spring is in a larger lug casing, it is OK to put them behind it, but wrapping is the better option IMO. I wrap all of mine with a heay cloth, or felt, but all of them get wrapped woth something. I am using whatever I have in a heavy cotton material as I feel it works as well as anything else will.

ok I'll look at the shop and see what I have. I have 1,000's of rolls of fabric and vinyl. I'll take a spring to work with me and have my seamstress cut them out. hehe. Is that cheating? lol

Hi Poppy

For my recent Gretsch restore project I saw the felt pieces on the restore site here too. So what I did was I went to a fabric store and bought some thin felt. I cut a piece until I had the correct size to fit inside the lug and behind the spring but not so the felt would affect the tention nut movement if you get what I mean. From there I just cut a "whack" of pieces and did all my lugs. I don't know if it made a difference - maybe a little - the lugs won't rattle anyway this way. Some say that little rattle is part of "that great Gretsch sound" - haha.

Cheers,
