Teardrop re-wrap

My Sonor teardrops came to me as a re-wrapped kit a couple of years ago. I bought them with the intention of re re-wrapping them. The kit needed all 3 badges, a tom post, slotted tension rods, original matching hoops. I have all that stuff now. I think it cost me twice what I paid for the 3 drums to begin with.

I just bought vinyl wrap and used the tape method, i'm not 100% sold on the black sparkle, it's a little more sparkle than an original sonor finish.

I have the 12" tom done. 20" and 16" let to do. I'll post a full set pic once they are all done.

Before: this pic makes the wrap look nice but it had some serious discoloring on that satin finish.

It does look good, I think the hardware is more at home with that finish than the satin flame. Do you happen to have any strips of the old wrap? I'm in need of some for a Gretsch kick drum hoop project I have.

Manny, the tape method is ok but I should have glued it down. As I said I wasn't sure if I was going to stay with this wrap or not so that's why I just taped it. I think it would be better to use tape through out the circumference of the shell rather than just the seam.

One thing with this wrap it it's more difficult to cut out larger hole for things like mounting etc. because if it's flexibility. It also tends to compress a bit when the lugs and mounts are attached. Since this is just a beater kit and the shells have some serious flaws I think this wrap will do just fine for me.

Infiniteninja, you have some inlays coming, hope you can use them.

I certainly cannot speak to the quality of your shells, but that sure doesn't look like a beater kit to me! It looks pretty sweet. Love those teardrop kits.

Here they are with black hoops. I do have the original chrome hoops but they aren't in the best shape so I went with black wood hoops with matching inlays.

As to them being a beater kit, I really do mean the shells aren't in the best shape, lots of extra holes from a previous owner using different mounts. Edges are great though and the chrome is excellent for it's age.

I think they look great. And just because there are a few extra holes, as long as they are not big tubular mount holes and just screw mount holes your fine. Should not make any difference in sound. I wrapped a kit and left the holes on the bass drum that was factory drilled for cymbal mounts in case I ever sold it the buyer could add them if he wanted to. Same for the mounted tom that took a clip diamond mount. You can't tell by the looks or sound.
