Tapping swivel nuts - question

I appologize if this has been discussed before, but I did a search and didn't come up with anything.

Someone suggested that I could 'tap out' the metric swivel nuts on my MIJ drums to fit standard rods. Kind of like as described on this site:

http://www.nmri.go.jp/eng/khirata/metalwork/basic/bolt/index_e.html

Does anyone have any experience with this? Does this work? Is it ill-advised? The old MIJ threads dont look like they're made out of the sturdiest of metals.

Any thoughts? I've pretty much given up on trying to source enough original metric t-rods, and I haven't found any inserts that have a collar for the internal spring (that I can veryify will fit the lugs.) What to do?

I just swapped out a bunch of metric swivel rods on my Majestic for standard ones and used regular tension rods...makes life a bit easier, and the drums are now functional!!

As for your questions,As far as re-tapping the insert out to say 12/24 thread if your insets are the thin metric threads it will crack the inserts the hole is too small to make it bigger say to 12/24.I would not do this the M.I.J. inserts of the 60s most are made of a pot metal..As far as new ones say 12/24 inserts you should not have a problem getting them, with the collar to fix your lugs..if you do run into the new inserts not fitting the lugs you could file alittle off at the end of insert[[nut looking end]] that the spring goes onto to fit your lugs[[i have done this in the pass]] also sometimes the hole[[at top of lug]] where the insert goes into the lug maybe be too small for the new insert again just file the hole alittle so the new one will fit....Mikey

Thanks Mikey. I was a pretty hesitant to try the tapping method exactly because I know the inserts are not made out of the most substantial metal. I will look for some new inserts with the collar for the springs. And thanks very much for the tip about filing the inserts to make them fit. So simple, but never thought of it!

How many inserts do you need?? Do you want them 12/24 threads? If so i have 1,000's of them.If you would post or email me a photo of the inside of lug or just the insert out of the lug...i will just send you some...mikey
