did swingstars have a zola coating and if so at what time, to my knowledge tama have made this line of drums for a long time, i would assume they are tama's version of pearls export line?

Something like 1982-89 i think... The Zola Coating is similar to a current epoxy finish called Garage Guard, which is used on floors

They even have a brown version

- And yes, they are comparable to Exports.

Personally, I like Tamas hardware a lot better than Pearls, especially the tomholders.

On the other hand, a lot of Tama lugs from that period are made from an alloy partly consisting of old cheese and fall apart if you sneeze near them.

Funnily, the Superstars seems more afflicted of this illness than Swingstars, at least to my experience.

I agree ... Tama tom mounts of the day were superior for positioning and stability. I still have my SwingStars that I bought new in 1986 ... and they have the zola coat. I have never had an issue with the lugs.

I thought the Rockstars were more of the Exports equivalent and the Swingstars more the Forums equivalent, but I'm no expert.

And I also prefer the Tama mounts better then Pearl's.
