Tama superstar

Could someone educate me on Tama superstars?

Are they made in different grades?....different woods?...why are some expensive and others not....does the T badge make a difference?

a quick lesson would be appreciated

T-badge drums are birch shells w/staggered seams. Excellent drums. Most are finished wood exteriors, with Black and White enamel also. Outstanding quality control at the factory. I have no knowledge of the newer Superstars, but if they are like the newer Imperialstars don't bother.

I had a 6pc Superstar in Cherry Wine, purchased new in mid 1980 with matching snare drum. Really nice drums! 6-ply birch shells, with matching color interiors. Here's a link to the Tama catalogs. Check the 70's and 80's sections for Superstar drums. Enjoy!

The new Superstars, which have been discontinued were birch with 1 outer ply of basswood then 100% birch after '09 (I think).

They had factory die-cast hoops, the build and finish quality is very good. Main difference is the type of birch used and the shell thickness. The original Supe's used Japanese birch with thick shells, newer ones are either Chinese or American birch (Tama didn't specify) and have thinner 6mm shells (7mm bass and snare)

The Silverstar has the same shells as the Superstar, with Sound Arc flanged hoops instead of die-cast
