There were 2 lines-Rockstar and Rockstar Pro.Neither specified the main body plies,but the Rockstar Pro interior ply is laquered Basswood.Japanese veneers.....whatever that is.After replacing all the crappy white metal hardware,I'm very happy with my 89 Rockstar Pro's.I also had to cut down the 13" to 10" deep.The seperate lugs have a plastic insert inside that acts as a lug lock-and they look like Sonor Champions from 10 feet:D

I believe the Rockstar kits up until the past few years are all luan (luaun) 'mahogany'. They're great sounding & well-built.

And made in Taiwan??

It depends on the era, Wayne. In the beginning, TAMA built all their drums in Japan. It was not until later on that they decided to outsource the building of the lower end kits to Taiwan. I cannot tell you when that was, but today, all Star Classics are made in Japan, and I think the next line down may be as well, but don't hold me to that.

As I recall, Rockstar RS, Rockstar DX, and Rockstar PRO.

RS was painted black inside, split lugs available in black white and red available as a five piece only was in 10x12 11x13 16x16 16x22 (ibelive these kits were taiwanese) 8x10 and 12x14 add on's were available.

DX kits were Basswood interiors with wraped exteriors,one piece lugs, these kits were built to take on pearls export series. sizes were in Xtras 8x8 10x10 11x12 12x13 13x14 14x15 15x16 16x16ft 16x18ft and 16x20,22 or 24 (all eight lug except the 24") steel 6.5x14 8lug snare

Pro kits were nearly identical to DX but had a few upgrades like basswood exteriors in transparent finnishes that showed the woodgrain like amber black red blue white, same sizes but with 10 lugs on the 22" kick w/ matching wood hoops! , chrome over birch snare 6.5x14

Tama moved the Starclassic Maple manufacturing to China last year. The only Japanese Starclassic Maple drums available now are when they have to make a new drum to match an existing older kit. The Omnitunes and Elites are the only new drums produced in Japan now.

I have always loved my Rockstar DX!! they are so big and powerful!! All power toms!! Even the 16" Rack Tom!!

not powertoms, those are 8x10 10x12 11x13 12x14 13x15 14x16 like pearl

Tama Xtras are deeper (based off of Ludwig's deep sizes)

the 10x11 was only available in ArtstarII/GranstarII it was for the 11/13/15 tom configuaration, a little bigger with still the 2 inch seperation, it did not take off.

Maybe not power toms but bigger then the standard concert depths. Still fun to play
