Reminds me of the old white box scam where a guy trys to sell you brand new speakers out of the delivery van claiming they loaded one to many at the dock.

$400 bucks for a low end snare that was $100 bucks retail sight unseen?

All different kinds of collectors. Years ago I came across a fellow who collected rare NOS car parts. He only bought rare NOS items in the original factory packaging and un-opened (so sight unseen). Apparently the sight un-seen element held some special allure.
