Tama Maple Piccolo-Model?

Loading...

Greetings,

I recently picked up one of these used. It is in great shape. It has the Mighty Hoops and is a 10 lug model, with the same badge as the photos. It is a 3.5" x 14".

In doing some cursory research, I've seen this referred to an "Artwood" and also a "Starclassic". I don't believe it's a Starclassic, because isn't the "badge" engraved in the shell? Also, aren't all the Starclassics made in Japan? Anyway, can anyone confirm if this was referred to as an "Artwood" model? I am under the impression that it is an all-maple shell. Is that right? Also, both photos appear to be 8 lug models (got the photos from the internet). Mine has 10 lugs, but is otherwise identical. Was there a difference between them, other than 2 more lugs? It sounds fantastic.

Thanks for your help,

V

V,

You are correct - that is not a starclassic. The early starclassics were all MIJ, some time in the last 10 years most SC manufacturing has been moved to MIC. I believe the SCM's are still MIJ (as are the high-dollar Star line).

Early maples (from 1994, the first year) all had the label in the finish as you noted; the starclassic birch and performers all had metal badges. The very first year SCB's may have had the decal label as well, iirc.

I am not certain if your snare is maple or not, but frankly, Tama doesn't make anything that is not high-quality.
