Tama Cocktail Jam.... ?

So my band-mates are wanting to play some family and friends gigs in Michigan and in Florida. I’m crusty old and don’t really feel like dragging my drums across the country. So I see this Tama cocktail jam kit that fits in two bags total! Most of my stuff is “boom... chic... boom... chic”... so that little kit might be the ticket.

My conflict: One part of me says I’m old and tired and I sure don’t want to risk losing or damaging a vintage kit but another part of me says these drums were meant to be played and it would be cool to take them on the road as it were.

Thoughts??

Hey J!m,

I would reach out to see if there is a local store that might rent you a kit for the trip.

The big box store that rhymes with Guitar Center might do that, maybe talk to Chaz at the Orange store and see what he can do to help, he's a nice and helpful guy

Michael

Get one of these shipped to your destination. Call it your road kit. These drums are the best sounding maple drums on the market, in my opinion. Check out the black sparkle.

Shipping and renting....wow! I’m embarrassed to say those are two good ideas I did not even think of! I would still be battling that “last mile” to a venue but those options certainly eliminate the long haul issue.

I've played the Tama set & really didn't care for it, the "bass" drum is IMHO, worthless at anything over acoustic piano volume.

I got a set of Ludwig Breakbeats last year & love 'em, I'd looked at small sets for years & didn't like anything until the Breakbeats. They sound good out of the box, but I've upgraded mine with new hoops (including maple for the BD), better heads top & bottom & Puresound snares.

Thanks F/F! Columbus Percussion said they would order a Tama Cocktail Jam and let me “test drive” it. Gotta say, Jim Rupp at Columbus Percussion is the best at supporting his customers!

I have read other complaints about the kit. :(. My attraction is really the portability... man I love the idea of just two bags!!

Thanks again for the feedback.

Here's my Breakbeats all packed up, snare & toms in the tall case, BD, hardware & cymbal bags. All of it will fit in the backseat of a car.
