Supraphonic shell replacement

Loading...

Has anyone on the forum replaced a Supraphonic / Acrolite shell with one of the black nickel plated brass shells from places like drummaker.com etc.?

I was thinking about doing that to my 70s 6.5"x14" Supra and still have the option to switch back whenever I wanted.

I have a 5x14 60s supra that just covers so much ground that a 6.5x14 brass snare looks really appealing. This is even more appealing w/ the $150 price tag for the 6.5" deep shell, pre-drilled.

I did it with a 5x14. Sounds better to my ears, but I'm a brass guy anyway. Be careful when you drill for the throw. The snare beds are VERY subtle.

Nice! How did you go about drilling for the throw? Any special tips, or just be careful?

Just make sure that you have it over the snare beds. The beds are so shallow that I thought there were none. Big time stupid. Now I have extra holes where I put them in the wrong place. As always, measure 5 times, measure again, drill, and cuss.

Ah that stinks! I'm sure it still sounds killer though! Any samples of it recorded?

No recorded examples, but the new Ludwig Black Magic drums use a similar shell as does the Pork Pie Big Black and World Max Black Hawg.
