I have a question regarding a Ludwig B&O Supraphonic 6.5 X 14 snare. The inside shell has a flat black type coating on the shell walls. Is this a factory feature?

Black on the inside of the shell for a Supraphonic is not a factory finish that I can recall......
Don't recall ever seeing that finish on the inside of a Supra. Never even heard of it. Are you sure someone didn't paint the inside of the shell themselves?

Thanks for the help guys. It does not have the sticker on the outside of the black but now I need to look and see if the sticker was painted over. The paint/coating looks like it was brushed on and does not cover every spec of the interior shell walls. The coating may be something other than paint. The only thing I can think is this was someones way of dampening but I cant see how it would affect much. I hope I can remove it with little trouble. I just wanted to make double sure it was not a factory one-off. I spoke with the Lawton Drum Co. and they had not seen this either.
The snare itself is intact and is pretty clean for a 402. It has some of the typical pitting but nothing real severe. I will post some pix of the inside tonight.

MAN!! I LOVE 402's!! The paint should clean off pretty good as it's on a chrome finish, I doubt it was ever a factory thing to paint chrome!! L0L!!
Bear in mind, not ALL the 402's had a LudaLoy sticker. Others might just have FALLEN off before it got to the next buyer.

Would be cool to look at whenever you get the chance to post some shots.

Sorry about taking so long to get back...I started trying to remove it which has proven to be really difficult. This is a very unusal coating which I will try and describe. The spots where I could peel it off has left the original shell finish undamaged however the material is a super fine thin copper foil with a black electrical tape type backing. VERY STRANGE and this is proving to be a real bear to remove. I guess it was someone idea of dampening but where and how they applied this material so uniformley is baffeling. It concerns me that this may be having some effect on the tone. BTW the date is appx 77-78 era with no stamp around the tone control so it must be a ludalloy.
