Superstars - Circa '82

Awwwww yeah! Acquired these gorgeous girls today. Don't have them up to my specs yet (heads and tuning) but I had to get some pictures. Just got them home and set up not more than an hour ago so playtime is going to have to wait until tomorrow

Gonna be gettin' my Stan Lynch on real soon... Excited

13-16-24 in traditional depths. The finish is lovely, with just enough dings, dents and patina to keep me from worrying about it. Still quite presentable, methinks, and the wood grain pattern on each drum is unbelievable.

Birch at its beat.My superstars are 76-77 9600 series.Thin 4 ply,6 mm shells with re rings,in custom walnut,which is a dark satin finish.13/14/16/22 with various snares,but i do have a 82-82 Superstar snare, 8x14 all birch in super mahogany,die cast rims.These drums don't dissapoint.Woody and warm,with just enough attack.

Beautiful drums in perfect sizes. You're going to love the 24" bass drum. Some day I hope to find a kit in maple finish, for the right price of course.Clapping Happy2

You are lucky-I had to MAKE my concert tom set double-headed.Most of the double headed sets I have seen were giant hair-band dimensions.Good idea with the seperately mounted tom, too. It changed the acoustic properties of both the bass and mounted tom on mine.

Thanks for the kind words, fellers!

I'm REALLY diggin' this set so far. Can't wait to get it out to some gigs. The whole deal was just pure luck... I happened to have some drum gear I wasn't using that the other party wanted, and he was happy to get rid of the Superstars because he's into smaller drums.

teverson-sr... You are correct about the mounted tom. If I found a Tama single-tom mount, I'd probably go with that, mainly for ease of use. But for now I'm running it in a snare stand with the Gauger FlexFrame mount. Opens up the tom sound nicely and puts it in line with the floor tom.

They are beautiful drums for sure and they sound awesome. Between these and my Recording Customs, I think I've got the best of the birch world!

Cheers,

Ryan

Just for fun, here's a quick and dirty soundfile of the Superstars.

Recording rig is very primitive... a Fostex 4-track digital recorder, one SM-81 over my head and pointing down at the snare drum, and an SM-57 in front of the bass drum. No effects or processing, just the mics running dry into the recorder.

They sound just like rock n roll to me. I'm a happy man.

Nice set! I have 2 sets of Superstars and I love them. You can get a lot of sounds out of them. They can sound as modern as any set, but you can tune them vintage and they sound great too. Congrats on a great looking kit.

(Nice playing too!)
