Suggestions for Low Height Vintage (or vintage style new) Snare Stands

Loading...

Hey Guys,

I have an issue where I have a new PDP 14 X 7 1/2 snare with wood hoops that will not fit any of my snare stands. The snare is about 16" in diameter with the wood hoops and is about 8" high.

The snare baskets will not open up far enough.

I would like a flush bottom snare stand or one with legs that will lay flat for that clean vintage vibe.

I found an old Ludwig stand with the sliding middle snare basket arm. I don't know the model but the legs can be up or lay down flat. The snare fits the basket but the issue is it sits the snare too high. I need the lowest height of the part of the basket where the snare will sit to be no higher than 18".

Any suggestions on vintage stands to look for with low heights? Anybody happen to have a couple of different stands they wouldn't mind measuring the lowest height to help narrow down the search? The Hamilton KB 274 has the vintage vibe and looks like it goes low enough but the legs do not lay flat.

Also, does anyone know the if the baskets for the newer flush bottom stands such as the DW ultra light or Gibraltar can accommodate 16" in diameter?

Thanks!

You should consider adapting an existing stand by shortening the tubes and reattaching the legs.

Thanks for the suggestion. On my cheaper overseas made non-vintage stands I would try shortening them but the snare will not fit in the snare baskets.

I really do not want to do a permanent modification on a vintage stand that is original and in good condition unless I did not have any other options.

I'll keep watching Craigslist and see what pops up.

I use a couple Yamaha light weight stands and they go pretty low. I used one with an 8x14 Rogers wood dynasonic.

You might need to track down a really old style snare stand that had 2 swing arms and a sliding arm to fix the snare. Maybe not as efficient as the modern one's that screw up.

Cut the basket side rod by 3". The problem is that in most cases, that tube bottoms out when inserted in the base and the basket sits too high. I do it all the time for marching style snares that are 10" high.

Keep fixing them up...
