Studio 49 Rotary Timpani

Hi all,

I recently acquired this rotary timpani from a garage sale. According to the seller the drum had been in their family for many years. From what I have learned on their website Studio 49 was founded by Carl Orff in 1949 and is still producing instruments today. Judging by the hexagonal nuts and dark mahogany I believe this drum to be made between 1975 - 1992. Tuning is accomplished simply by turning the drum clockwise to tighten and counter clockwise to loosen. It measures 22.5 cm (8 3/4'') deep and 38.5 cm (15 1/8'') wide.

I had never seen one of these before and think it is pretty freakin cool.

My question is: Does anyone know how to get a precise date of manufacture?

Any help would be appreciated.

You looked inside the shell for markings or stamps?

Why not contact Studio49 directly, send them photos to see if they can date it for you?

If i recall right that paper badge that you have on the drum would date the drum from 1957-1965 or so....Mikey

i have a similar drum made by Tromsa for Kings in Holland. it doesn't have the rotary tuning feature but in all other ways is similar. i never knew where to catagorize this drum but now , this post helps.
