Student's New Drums

Loading...

I went to teach one of my young students (12 yr old) the other day, and he told me he had been given a drum set by his grandpa. Here is what he was given...

The pictures are from a cell phone, so sorry about the quality.

Beautiful kit. I once attended a drum clinic with the late great Louie Bellson who quipped that he liked cannister thrones because you could fit a meatball sandwich in it!

I'm always amazed to see what my students are playing on too. Everything from total junk and pots and pans to high end collectibles that they don't even know what they have. Some kids think all drums are REMO or ATTACK.

Funny Post Way to go Louie! I've never owned a canister throne personally, so I haven't tried out the meatball sandwich trick :)

I try to tell all of my students who have decent sets (or decent heads for that matter) that their drums will last and sound good for much longer if they play in control and don't let neighborhood kids/friends smash on them for the sake of smashing.

I told this student in particular that his drums were special and he was VERY lucky to have them! I took all of the bare nuts they had holding his vintage A zildjians on and helped him set them up a little better. Hopefully this kit will end up a family heirloom. His grandpa, dad, and now him!

I met Louie on 2 occasions when I was in high school. The second time was at the Florida Theater in Jax and he gave me a pair of sticks and signed a Remo Poster that I had framed later. He pulled the new sticks out of his seat case. I was blown away. I still have one of them. It was a 5A Mike Balter pair of sticks with nylon tips. He was a really cool guy and always played well. God bless you Louie and may you rest in peace.

Louie came to play with our Jazz I group in college, and my good friend who was the drummer of the ensemble got to play Louie's drums on a couple tunes. My friend knarfed his knuckles on a floor tom rim and proceeded to bleed all over the drums. Louie was psyched!

Genius.
