stripping of paint off old drums

Loading...

hi.

i have an older gretsch bass drum (circa 80's) and the shell has been painted on by the previous owner. Its not a bad paint job, but i would like to strip the paint off of the shell and hoops and do somthing different. Has anybody done this sort of thing before? if i use a chemical to strip the paint off, will that have adverse effects on the shell? Will there be a lot of remnent of paint that i would most likely have to sand out?

Here is an article on the main web site that will cover some of your questions.

There are some good non-toxic paint strippers and they do not have an adverse affect. It is a liquid so I would give the shell a little time before

finishing it. The directions should help with that.

More then likely you will also have to sand if you are going to use paint again on the shell. For sure if you are going to use stain.

As always if you intend on using a wrap, make sure a standard head will still fit on the drum.

Hope that helps.
