Hello...new member, first post. I recently acquired an old Ludwig kit, late 70's or early 80's by my estimation (see pic 1). It's a monster of a kit! Anyway, the seams on the toms are nothing I have seen before (see pic 2). Was this a seaming method used by Ludwig at some point, or is this a bad DIY job? I have no way of knowing if these are the original wraps or not. Any ideas on repairing this? Thanks for any insights.
Strange seams
1981-82 kit with the rivets holding the wrap and wrap shrunk.
I have a kit like it that had chrome wrap , I stripped it and had it painted and it is now my gigging set.
The shells are 6 ply and sound great otherwise.

Yep, Ludwig had the idea that installing rivets would eliminate the seam pulling apart. Of course, they found out it didn't. It was also just UGLY!! LoLoLoLo

You guys are awesome, thanks for the info. Now to figure what to do about it...
BTW, the kick is a 28. I don't see myself gigging on that anytime soon. My gigging kit has a 20. :)
I like the Red Silk kits. As far as I know they're not very common, especially with a 26-in kick. Nice kit. If I had to guess I'd say that's an '80 to '82 era kit due to the 10 lug 14-in tom and the Coliseum snare drum.
Apparently, using rivets was a last ditch effort for Ludwig at the time. You should be able to use some contact cement or counter top adhesive to glue the seam. Might be a good idea to tape off whatever you don't want glue to get on.
Correction- a 28-in kick. That was a real special order back in the day.
28-14-16-18, 14x8 snare. Re-gluing the seams will still leave the awful rivet holes, but I guess there isn't much I can do about that.

I sold a 13" Ludwig WMP tom here on the forum a few years ago. It was a beautiful drum but had the same issue that yours has. The new owner found some of the same wrap and cut it perfectly to vertically cover the entire rivet section. Turned out really nice. I had a before/after pic but it must be on another computer.

Those riveted seams were perhaps the worst idea that ever emanated from the Ludwig factory.
Had to be acnon drummer Enginner who designed them.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
