Here is a little tidbit for you a band I was playing in in 1968 opened for The Who for 3 shows over 2 days one being a afternoon show with another evening show the same day, I talked alot with Kieth about the wear and tear on his kit at the time I was playing a Cleveland Rogers setup with 3 toms up and we both loved the tom holders but when he kicked the set over at the end of My Generation, Due to the weight and size of his toms the mounts started cracking the shells he threw stuff everywhere depending on what Townsend did the crazier he got the loonier moon got , so when I took his road manager to buy some strats at a local music shop he had mentioned that they were working on a kit with reinforcement mountings so the maltese crosses must have been what they ended up with... I got to sit and play the picures of lilly kit and I had a bunch of pictures of it but they got burned in a fire in 1971.. I wish I still had them...

Wow, Mike T, that is a pretty awesome story. So cool. I guess I better start working on that time machine. Where did I leave those plans . . .

Ok Lee, I got my notes out on the set i worked on.when i talked to Cindy Moon she told me that her Dad had 4 sets of these drums.Two were used in the filming of Tommy,the other two sets were used on stage.On the bass drums each tom mount had a "Cross" plate on the outside and a metal plate on the inside of the drum the spurs also had these "Star" looking plates too the same way as the "Crosses" had.On the photos you posted the tom on the right bass drum is set up wrong why? do you see the second tom mount not being used the drum should be turn around with the badge facing to the batter head of the drum.If you look you will see a cymbal mount on the right bass drum that is wrong it should not be their.The way the drum should be set up is the tom mount you see Not being used should be used were the tom mount is being used in the photo that tom mount should be used were the cymbal mount tube is makeing the tom sit the other way around on the bass drum...I will be going down to SO.Ca the first part of Jan i will go by and get some better photos and see if my friend could get me a close-up look at the set again and take much better photos...Mikey

Thanks for digging out your notes and reporting back. And it would be great to get some more detailed photos. Maybe you can offer the Grammy museum or Ms Moon your services in putting the kit back together correctly, and in the process can take some measurements or tracings or make a couple of casts of those plates for me!!!

Maybe you can answer this one for me, based on your hands on history with the Gold Moon kit.

It seems to me that KM had two Rogers Swivo double tom mounts on the kick drum on drummer's right. He had two Rogers tom mounts on each tom: one lower on the shell near the front of the tom, one higher up on the middle of the tom.

And then he had two single Swivo tom mounts with 60 degree mounts on either side of the kick on drummer's left with two mounts on the tom itself.

In the attached you can see the two Rogers double tom mounts inside the drummer's right kick in the photos of KM in action. And you can see the extra mounts on the toms on the gold kit. I suspect that the toms should be rearranged so that the toms I've number 2 and 3 should be switched with each other. And tom 1 is missing one of the mounts on its side.

Here are the beginnings of some replicas of the tom and kick spur mounting plates that KM had on his kits circa 71-74. Cut from 1/8" stock. Need to bend to conform to shell, cut holes for mounting screws and nickel plate. But they look pretty cool to my eyes.
