I’m currently involved in a possible trade discussion involving my late 70s Black Panther Ludwig kit and a late 50s Duco (black/gold) Slingerland kit that I have an interest in obtaining. I’m hoping to get some input from you “experts” out there that might sway me in one direction or the other.

First, let me state that neither kit is being utilized at the current time. Both might actually be considered “excess” kits.

My kit is in a 8x12/9x13/16x16/22x14 configuration (no snare) while the Slingy kit is in a 9x13/14x14/22x12 configuration and includes the matching 5.5x14 snare drum.

Although I consider my kit to be in excellent, original condition with no extra holes or modifications (although some have questioned the black satin bass drum hoops), when I listed it for a possible sale I received very little response. Because of this, I haven’t really been able to establish a fair market value.

The Slingy kit does have its share of minimal scuffs, scrapes and scratches but nothing that I’d consider a major cosmetic flaw, especially when considering its age (1956-1959 era). I currently own a 22x12 bass drum and matching 5.5x14 snare drum in the identical finish from which I was hoping to build a complete kit. Unfortunately I was never able to find the matching toms to complete the project. The snare drum I currently own has a 3-point strainer while the one with the kit I’m considering comes with a Rapid strainer. I’m not sure why the strainers are different, since they’re both 8-lugged drums with rim clips and the company’s black/brass badge from the 1956-1959 Chicago era. I’m also having trouble determining the value of this kit since I haven’t seen too many of these being offered recently. Included with the kit is the original clamp-on L-arm mount, clamp-on bass drum spurs and original snare drum and hi-hat stands.

The current owner of the 50s Slingy kit feels that his kit is worth more than my Black Panther kit, especially with the inclusion of the matching snare drum. Because of this he is willing to trade his kit for mine PROVIDED THAT I throw in a modern 6 1/2x14 Gretsch Full Range Rosewood snare. This particular snare sells new for $579.00 at Guitar Center. However I attempted to sell this drum a short time ago at a price of $350 but didn’t have any takers.

I’m hoping that those of you taking the time to read this post will be kind enough to provide some “words of wisdom” as to whether or not you’d pull the trigger on this one.

THANKS in advance for your time and your help!

I wouldn't throw in the snare drum. You aren't a drum trader paying rent from these transactions, from what I gather. You are a player/hobbyist like most of us and I wouldn't allow myself to be squeezed for any deal sweeteners for a kit-for-kit trade. Nope. Anyways, it is pretty common knowledge that Ludwig's bring more do-re-mi than Slingerlands do anyways, generally speaking. Just my thoughts here......

Edit-By giving the snare in the deal, you are essentially paying for shipping both kits. Trying to pick up "extras" on deals and quickly selling them to lessen the costs of shipping or the purchase price is pretty common...

Even-up swap, 'feels' ok. Sounds like you really want the Duco kit. The Panthers -plus- 'another drum' for the Duco's would be a definite deal breaker for me though.

Too many great drums to list here!

The Ludwig's have a higher resale value than the slingerland kit, also Duco painted drums bring less money period. If the snare drum is a slingerland artist model that would offset the trade difference some.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

That sure does seem lopsided to me (not favoring you, unfortunately). You are still missing the 16. I would have to pass ... were it me. Remember the passion of the hunt.

Hey OS;

I agree with the rest... kit for a kit is fine, but the snare kills the deal. Besides, I also agree that the Luddy's are worth more in dollar value... of course it's not always about the money.

Thanks to all of you who provided your time and input regarding my situation. You seem to have confirmed my initial thought that my kit + the Gretsch snare would be too much in trade for the 50s Slingy duco kit, despite the fact that I'd really like to get that one.

If any of you know of someone looking for a clean Ludwig Black Panther kit or a like new Gretsch ( 6 1/2 x 14) Full Range Rosewood snare please tell them to drop me a PM. Perhaps we could work something out!

Black Tiger?? Thats a new one! LoLoLoLo........Like the others said, no deal. Black PANTHERS have a higher value than any Slingerland kit (unless they were owned by Buddy Rich or Gene Krupa, and you'd need proof of that) I'd pass on that deal....

Oops!DOH

I was reading an article about the Detroit "Tigers" miserable performance in this year's World Series while I was writing my post and obviously had Lions and "Tigers" on my mind in lieu of "Panthers." Thanks for pointing out my error. Your comment is noted and my original post corrected.

Now, I do own a Slingy Red "Tiger" kit but that one's not going anywhere!
