Sticking a loos badge down to the shell by Poppy

Loading...

I saw a post a little bit ago by Slingerland asking about adhesive for loose badges. Well here goes. I have experimented with different types of glue all my life. It the auto trim business we have to know how to repair many different things. We use a lot of glue and various adhesives on a daily basis. Here is a excellent way to stick a loos badge down. You'll need a little contact adhesive, I use weldwood flammable, A tiny paint brush, some masking tape, 100 grit sandpaper, and some small needle nose. 1st I tape off around the loose area of the badge, to protect the finish of the drum,. Then I sand the spot on the shell the badge will stick to. If you dont sand it the glue probably wont stick, especially if the shell has a slick finish. Wrap a small piece of sand paper around the tip of the needle nose pliers,to sand under the badge, and the shell.

The glue will adhere much better to course surfaces than slick surfaces. take the tiny paint brush, or a q-tip will do in a pinch, paint the back of the badge, and the spot on the shell. Get glue on the masking tape on porpuse. Wait till the glue isn't wet, but still tacky, you can test this on the glue you got on the masking tape. When the glue is dry but tacky, peel off the tape and stick the badge.

Nicely done. I've used contact cement in the past to glue down badges, but have always used the kind that comes in the tubes from hobby shops instead of the paint-on Weldwood type, but similar effects. Never thought about taping around the edges like you did. I always just put enough on it where it wouldn't pop out the sides too much where I couldn't catch it with a rag or something.

You can buy a quart of it, and maaybe even a pint. We buy 3-4 5gal pails of it at a time. We spray it on with a quart paint gun and a 2 gallon Binks pot style paint gun also. The badge is stuck.

This why I love this place...........just the information I was looking for, one question, I noticed you didn't remove the badge completely, wouldn't it be easier for sanding just to take it off, since my badge is also some type of metal, I would think if you removed the badge, you could use the needle nose to straighten out the corners before securing it back on,

Glad I found out which glue to use, when I was at the hardware store I saw so many types of glue my head was dizzy. THANKS SO MUCH!!!

That would just be up to you. Mine was just loose on the one side, so I didnt have to chisel the back of the grommet off and hunt down the correct grommet and mess with the grommet tool, however I have a real cool grommet tool I purchased from myoldkentuckydrums on ebay that works perfectly. It cost 36.99. There are many cheaper tools out there. I tried the grommet tools we have at my upholstery shop, but they don't work near as good on drums as they do on canvas.

Another thing, on the older thicker badges, I dont think its necessary to glue the badges down, especially the smaller badges like the ludwig keystone badges. I have a 1960 slingy snare. that badge is much thicker and heavier

than the badge I demonstrated. Just make sure its bent slightly more than the drum shell's curve, and the grommet will suck it down to the shell

Thanks for this thread! I've had a loose slingerland badge on the kick for months now and I couldnt bear myself to try to glue it. I will reshape it now.
