Stewart "Stencil Kit" Nostalgia

Loading...

Greetings to everyone from a new member! My first drum kit (in 1966) was a three-piece "stencil set" of Stewarts in red sparkle (5.5x14, 9x13, 14x22). Three years later, I traded them in on a Ludwig Downbeat set in White Marine Pearl, which I still have.

In a recent "nostalgia" move, I bought a three-piece set of yellowed WMP Stewarts, which I am cleaning and restoring. Finished the snare and it sounds surprisingly good! Working on the tom, but the bass drum needs some repair before I can put it to use. I'm looking forward to sharing some photos when I can.

FYI, I just posted a "wanted to buy" listing elsewhere on the Vintage Drum Forum for a 16x16 floor tom to go with my Stewarts, so if you know of something that might work, please let me know! Thanks!

Let me be the first to "Welcome" you to this forum!

This is a great resource with great knowledge and great people. You will enjoy your time on this forum!

That's cool about the Stewarts. I just recently bought a Stewart kit in Red Sparkle that was 13"/16"/20". I already have a red sparkle kit, so I am in the process of re-wrapping them in Gold Sparkle. I wanted something to keep the true "stencil" vibe, but not as common as blue or red sparkle, or black diamond pearl. You occassionally see some gold/orange sparkle MIJ kits, so that's why I chose that wrap. I thought about going with green sparkle, but as other forum members pointed out, MIJ kits didn't come in green sparkle.

Are your Stewarts fairly heavy luan wood, with a thin coat of gray paint on the interior? Also, do they have black plastic hoops? That's what mine came with. Also, a single rail mount and a (missing) cymbal arm bracket. I'll be posting photos of mine when I get them all done, and I look forward to seeing your photos as well!

Good luck with the floor tom search. Keep checking ebay. You could also substitute a stencil floor tom from that era that used virtually identical lugs and shells, and painted the interiors gray (if that's the case with yours). Whitehall is one name that immediately comes to mind, and then just put a Stewart badge on it. WMP might be a little tricky to find. Folks are great on this forum with spare parts, name badges etc.

I am working on a vintage Stewart kit in wmp also

My kit has the heavy luan interiors with the grey paint

but my 20"bass drum came with chrome hoops with wmp inlays

single 12" tom on rail consolette

the bearing edge on the reso side is chewed up and has a very deep gouge

too deep to re-cut the edge

just one of many problems with this kit

The floor tom has a huge section of it's wmp wrap missing

also I did not get a snare drum with the kit

I later won an ebay auction for a wmp stewart six lug snare

but it is quite a bit more yellowed than the rest of the drums

I have a Werco badged wmp floor tom in very nice shape on the way

these drums will end up playable and looking nice from a distance

I am too embarassed to mention here, some of the drastic measures I took

to have them appear in better shape than they really are.

If it were not for the fact, I am a sucker for the wmp

I really should never have gone forward with these particular drums

but the horse is out of the barn on this one

..I am looking for a decent Stewart or related wmp 12" tom shell with or without hoops and hardware

The pictures are all as they appeared when I found them

the drums are currently in a million pieces.

Love the nostalgia of your build. My first kit was also a red sparkle Stewart kit. It would be nice to have that kit again, for the same reason as you. I seem to remember my Stewarts having thick shells. Not sure if there were different shells for the line.

Anyway, Willkommen!

Hello Mitch,

so sorry for the delayed response Yes indeed, I noted fairly quickly

that it was the very thin coat (almost like whitewash) of white paint

that is what actually puts the "white" in my white marine pearl Stewarts

The wrap material as you pointed out being translucent

I was thinking of putting on a fresh coat but am not sure what sort of paint to use.

Same with the thin (but not quite as thin) coat of grey paint on the inner shells?

I am jazzed about these wmp 12" shells you mentioned

based on what you see from the pictures I put up

Do you think the shade and size of "krackle" (for lack of the proper term)

of the wmp pattern would match up okay with the other drums?

If you like you can contact me via my email Kenwood1@cox.net

Hello again Mitch

Bummer about the wmp covered shell

but yes if the other shell is 12"

with the light grey painted interior and is set up for the Slingerland copy Stewart and/or similar lugs I could sure use it

Mine has that ruined reso side bearing edge that I mentioned before

...so badly and deeply chewed to ever be re-cut

My only option to use that shell would be to put it back together as is

throw a head and hoop on that reso side and forget about actually playing it

my wmp wrap is salvageable with the help of some donor material from the damaged floor tom above ^ I know there will be some shrink so lining the lug holes back up to apply the screws all the way around

will be a challenge if not impossable to do.....................Kenwood
