Stewart Find

A new antique shop/garage opened up in town and I found this Stewart. I've seen some Stewart drums that were not bad little drums. This one seems to be on the cheaper end of the scale - although I don't know much about them. $40 and all I did was buy a $9 snare and put some used heads on it.

It sound like a snare drum - not a high-end one...not even close, but it's not bad. The best thing I like about it is the WMP finish and the badge. It's hard to get a photo of the badge in the house because of white&black and reflective. One B&W & a colour here shot here.

Anyone here know what year/make/model it is?

I just saw this thead and notice my badge does not say MIJ......mine must be really low end hu

Kona,

That badge puts it in the 70`s...For $50 invested you can`t really go wrong!! Once you smooth out the edges and put the right heads on, she`ll be singing...Jonni says the Aquarian Z-100`s really sound nice on these MIJ drums...I haven`t tried them myself yet...

Nice snare!!

Cheers

I think this drum was made a little earlier than the 70s. This is a Pearl catalog pic that shows, basically, the same drum with the same strainer. The catalog is susupposedly from 1966. So this drum was probably produced sometime in the mid 60s.

From what I've seen, this strainer is not as common as some of the later Pearl strainers. Many, like mine, are broken or have missing parts, so they were likely tossed. This was not the most durable strainer Pearl ever made.

Interestingly, we've now seen 3 black oval Stewart badges on the same drums with "Made In Japan," "Japan," and now "..." (But I really wouldn't read too much into that.)

Anyway, considering that it's a thin shell, a one ply coated head would probably work best and you won't want to crank it up too high.

By the way, that wrap looks fantastic!

Here's another thread discussing this era of Stewart drums:

I always thought that badge was produced in the 70`s, but, I very well could be mistaken...
