stave snare building tips

Loading...

hi folks,

i'm getting together some materials to have a go at making a stave snare drum.

i've been watching smileythejazzcat om you tube, endlessly for the last week!!! he is a true craftsman, worth a look at, if you haven't already.

anyway, my question is this - on one snare he's made, he uses mahogany on the inside, and birds eye maple on the outside(i'm dribbling just remebering the video!! mmmmm), is this for acoustic purposes, or aesthetics, or both?

is there any reason i couldn't try making one with just one wood? i'm thinking oak.

cheerz peeps

Both....

The mahogany is for warmth, the BE is to knock your eyes out. That is a classy and classic wood. The look you get from an aged birds eye maple is stunning when properly treated.

If you have some thick skin, head on over to Ghostnote. There are some great builders over there...

Drumshed is much more user friendly. they also have a builders manual online to help get you started. I built my first stave shell out of Poplar. Many mistakes along the way. I am currently working on 2 Stave shells made of Maple that are almost done. The different combinations of woods provide both acoustic properties as well as aesthetics. See the pic of my Poplar shell before I finished it. . . . James

thats a good looking shell fathertime.

i've never used a wood shell snare before. (i just heard all of your jaws hit the floor! ha ha), so i'd like one for that reason, as well as them sounding good, right?

any hoo, i'll keep you all posted on my progress.
