Started re-habin' the Star drums PICS!!

Started with the worst one, the snare. It had the most rust, missing parts, muffler knob pulled right through shell etc. The shell had factory re-inforcing pieces of wood where there was anything mounted through the shell. except where the muffler was. Found some 1/8" luan at work, laid it on top of a steam humidifier we also had at work, got it nice and soft so it would conform to the shell, glued, clamped, Wallah!! pieced together muffler but had to make a plate for the outside of the shell. Very happy with the outcome. Still have to pick up some snare wires and see how it sounds...Rich.

That snare can out very nice. I can't imagine what that drum must have sounded like when you consider that someone placed enough tension on the muffler to pull it through the shell. I get that these shells are thin and not really "structural battleships" but holy cow. Just tape a wallet on their like everyone else did in the 70's.

Nice work.

Looks great, and very resourceful. I patched soft and enlarged bass spur holes with an extra ply of luan. I didn't have a wood steamer, though. I imagine it made the clamping and gluing process much easier. That WMP wrap looks like it's in really good shape.
