Star Snare Positively Identified

Loading...

Cool1Ralf! I found it! I knew it was a real Star, even tho it says nothing but "Made In Japan". This is almost the top of the line, and is a copy, a very good copy, of the Slingerland Gene Krupa Radio King. Alas tho my heart is stilled, for brass 'tis not....But it sounds real good. Mine is Model 8256.The throw and butt on this drum are "interpretations" of a Gretsch type strainer system, with both ends adjustable, like the Micro-Sensitive" system. Not a flagrant rip, but a great interperation none the less. Works flawlessly. I have two snares with this set-up on them and I really like it. It took me 3 months to find the real connection, but finally, here it is. Now I can go on with life...on to the next mystery drum from the"Land of the Rising Sun". I am about to acquire the next set, no badge MIJ. I have a perfect match for the snare. I will have to re-wrap it to match, but I see no reason not to. The donor is the "Little Red Rocket". Pray for me, it is a single ply shell, and let's hope the wrap is not super-glued on.Eye Ball

Great, Jonnistix.Clapping Happy2

I guess, the STAR drums are still a little bit underrated against the other big names in drums from that aera (Slingerland, Ludwig). But they're coming.

Last ebay auction here in Germany brought for a 3-piece-set EUR 400, which is a fantastic price for a black-pearl-finish STAR drumset (incl. two cymbals and snare drum).

What do you mean with it?

I was unsure which maker it was, and it took me this long to actually find the exact model because I missed this one catalog over on the TAMA site. Now I know for sure. And this is exactly like the later Slingerland Aisian model, so I am wondering if by the mid-70s Slingerland had already started to discuss an off-shore partnership.

Hey nice snare! Absolutely Star. I have "Boston" 10 lug snare, which is identical to that drum- great drum too.

Thanks! Finally, someone that has one and backs me up on the sounds. I have played it with 4 different heads, Amb, Emp, SoundMaster(orig) and right now it has, get this-a Falams II K-Series Super. All of them have a completely different sound and tones are off the hook. The Falams tunes so high I am afraid I'm going to break lugs, and sounds like field drum.

Anywho, again for those that have not tried one of these, when see one for 20 bucks or so, buy it! You will not regret it. Be careful to get the one like mine tho, because 72.628% of the chrome jobbies out there suck. Well, let me re-state that. From this era, 60s into the 70s, they made some really good snares. The contemporaries of today are pretty much 99.876% garbage.

I'm with you Ralf.

What sounds good is very subjective. A "great sound" really is that sound which appeals to "you". But anyone who condemns a drum to not sound good due to its location of manufacture alone can't have tried to ever get a good sound out that drum. I haven't come across any drums, albeit a childs toy perhaps, that cannot be made to sound pleasing to my ear with some experimentation, and a little time and effort.

Hey All, I'm virtually a newborn at the vintage drum scene, but find it extremely interesting and exciting to be getting involved. I have attached a small collage of two Star kits I will be getting next week. The top 4 pics are a kit I am getting for $95 and the bottom 4 pics are a kit for $300. I have always been a Tama guy and when I first found about Star drums and them being the predecessor of Tama from you all here on this site I have kept my eye open and actually found both of these kits the same day on CL. If I didn't work two full time jobs I would no doubt spend much more time on here, but a guy has to do what he has to do.

It's a pleasure gleaning all of the fantastic expertise from you all, thanks!

Jim

Very nice! When you get a chance, please set them up so that we can see each one. Looks like a black sparkle and Black oyster?
