Star snare drum 'Super Strainer No.940' buildup

Hello,

I shortly acquired a Star kit including a metal snare drum with the no.940 snare strainer.

Maybe it was assembled false before as well, but the mounting I have done makes no sense: the spring doesn't effect the lever 'On-Off'-position and the lever doesn't really fix neither in the 'snares ON' nor in the 'Snares Off' position.

Furtheron the strainer is too close to the rim so that the connecting ribbon between wires and strainer builds up an almost 90 ° angle.

Attached please find the respective part. Declaration:

1 = long adjustment screw,

2 = lever (with the extension part showing in direction to the shell - but could also be mounted vice versa?),

3 = two small fixing square nuts,

4 = spring (is it on the correct side of the lever?),

5 = hexagonal screw (fixing the casing to the shell) and

6 = counter nut (inside of the shell).

Can anyone help with the sequence of the parts in the casing (drawing is not true to scale for the casing)?

Is anything missing? Thanks for clarification!

Cheers, Ralf

So on this strainer is the slot angled so when you move it left to right it changes the distance the metal housing sits from the shell? How do you connect the snares to the bottom?

Hi Ralf!

Judging by your drawing, the parts appear to be assembled properly. Attached are some pictures of my Majestic snare drum with the No. 940 strainer, taken some years ago. I still have the drum and checked it out last night. The knob sets the amount of inward motion towards the bottom hoop. Setting the knob too far out will cause the body of the strainer to swing too far in. You just need to experiment with proper setting to find what works. The attached pictures might be able to show the setting of knob on my strainer. If needed, I could possibly take my strainer apart to verify assembly, but I believe you have it correct.

Ralf,

I did some experimentation with my 940 to confirm a few things. The spring only supplies tension to the handle, but has nothing to do with the "On" or "Off" position. I removed the spring and the handle will be too loose, but still function. The cutout in the main body is what determines the front and back motion of the strainer, to tighten or release the snare wires.

Something else I noticed on your strainer is that the handle appears to be inserted into another tube. Is that correct? Look at my handle and you'll see the difference.

Ralf,

Took some pictures of the 940 strainer right now. Please be aware that the small bracket that attaches the strainer to the shell is actually backwards. The flat end attaches to the outside of the shell.

The square nuts have never been loosened. Note the cutout in the strainer top, which is what provides the "in-out" motion.

I hope all of this helps you figure out what is going on with your 940!

Hello teverson-sr and Mark,

Thank you very much indeed for taking care of my 'small' prob.

@teverson-sr: it's hard to see in the pic, but the 'ribbon' is a flat clear plastic band (you may see the reflexion of it in the casing, to the outside).

@Mark: your assistance is simply outstanding.

Your first pic showed in a tiny detail one difference to my mounting: the lever's bottom part shows to the knob - and not to the shell (like in my drawing).

Good eye on that!

Indeed, the handle was from (wrong?) usage deeply carved by the cutout - the cut is going almost half through the handle now and I've put a small protecting metal sheet in tube-shape over the cut.

I'll reassemble my strainer in short and hopefully it will be working well again. I'll let you know.

Thanks again so much.

Cheers, Ralf

Hello,

Unfortunately, I couldn' t solve the prob. The attached second pic shows it. The 'Snares-ON' position is to the left, but the lever isn't fixed there: it springs back a little bit, if I take my finger off. This leads to slightly loose snare wires again - which certainly isn't requested.

I really have no clue why the heck the lever should stay on the left side:

- the snare wires put tension to it and surely draw it back (to the right side) a little bit and

- the spring inside of the strainer casing also seems not to be of any help.

What keeps the lever normally fixed in the left side position?

I have replaced the former and more rigid plastic ribbon (for the snare wires) with a soft grosgrain ribbon which works very well now.

Cheers, Ralf

Hi Ralf!

You've got a tough situation here! Without having your strainer in front of me, it can be difficult to know what is going on. Per one of my other posts, I do know that the internal spring provides tension against the handle. However, I believe you said that the spring appears to be installed correctly. I'm not sure where to proceed from here.

Hello,

I think I found the reason.

The slot for the handle is broaded due to excessive usage of the handle of the years (that's also the reason why the handle was carved in the same area).

Attached you can see in the pic, how the slot was perhaps looking in new state (red line).

Due to the broaded space the handle cannot fix in the 'ON' position any more.

Result: I have to replace the complete strainer (I'll be searching for a used part, preferably from Tama, now).

Thanks again, Mark.

Cheers, Ralf
