Star, since 1908?!?

Loading...

Hey. guys,

In my previous thread, "The Elusive Star Conga is Mine!!!", I noted that I was extremely pleased at the condition of this drum. I still am but, today I started to break it down for a cleaning and polishing. I noticed something very strange on the badge. I had to get my magnifying glass to make sure I was seeing correctly. Yep, my eyes didn't deceive me. On the badge, in the top right hand corner, above the "Star Quality Instruments" the words, "since 1908" were printed! I was always under the assumption that Hoshino Gakki began the company in 1965. I still believe this. Could it be that Star was being a bit "creative" by trying to convince buyers of the age and prestige of the company? I'm not even sure from what I've researched, that early Tama serial numbers mean anything. If anyone can shed some light on this matter, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Brian,

Indeed, the roots go back to the year 1908, when 'Hoshino Bookstores' started selling musical instruments in their 'Musical Instruments Sales Division'. But this was just a trading business until the 60's.

According to different analog sources, STAR drums were produced on their own (in the meantime the company's name had changed to Hoshino Gakki) and for the first time in the year 1965.

Thanks VERY much, Ralf! I never knew anything about the Hoshino Bookstores. I find this kind of in-depth knowledge you possess fascinating. I am very appreciative!
