I thought I would throw a few more pics of my Star kit up. This is a kit I rescued about 5 years ago abandoned in the corner of a guitar shop. I have most of the original hardware, snare (and heads!) but it has turned into my primary gigging kit for the country band I play in. As such I have it set it up not to be period correct, but it's a great little workhouse kit and it gets lots of compliments.

Cool kit, but the lugs on the Tom i think are not Star ones. I could be wrong but the look like Pearl lugs.

Christian's right. Sweet looking kit, but to us enthusiasts, those Pearl lugs just spoil it. Sure you could find the proper replacements, probably right here on the forum. I'd say that's all it needs.
Thanks for the info! I was always curious as to why the tom lugs were different. I'm guessing that someone in the past must have changed them for some reason? Or would it have shipped from the factory that way?
Any idea what vintage these may be? I was guessing early 70's.
Irregardless it is earning it's keep gigging a few times per month and I really like it for what it is.

Beautiful kit, and I bet it sounds great, but is that a Yamaha Anton Fig snare you've paired it up with?

Those Pearl lugs are pretty much the generic go to replacement lugs. I didn't notice them, but folks are right, easy enough to change 'em out.
Start a thread in the parts section looking for the correct lugs.
Forum member 'Ralf' has a web site devoted to Star drums. You should give him a shout as well.

Yeah we now know our assignment - help you find those correct lugs. Place an informative (with pics) thread in the wanted section.
Also, it appears that your sound engineer / sound guy knows what he is doing, as I read / heard somewhere that micing a BD in the porthole can damage a mic (especially with a port like that - Kickport). Nonetheless, it is still a common practice to mic the hole.(???)

-It isn't a Yamaha Anton Fig snare, but it's very similar. It's a tube lug maple snare with wood hoops...I love the wood hoops for the country stuff I'm playing. Great side stick sound!
-I've mic'd my kick off the port for some time now, I've also heard that it is easier on the mic (and level) but also produces a nice sound. This particular gig I had a few comments that the kick sounded huge, warm, and deep without being overly "boomy"

Thanks for the reply on the micing - I will always request micing the head instead of the hole. I don't want to even come close to damaging any mic in the slightest and also I have been very frustrated with BDs that are too boomy - to the point where you can't even tell what they are playing. When we all seem to always desire and chase bigger, deeper, boomier, punchier, etc. - too much boom is not good. I have heard mixes where they should have known better sound too muddy, overdriven, etc. Clarity it a necessity IMHO.
Nice job cleaning this kit up! Are these the thicker shells or the thins with re-rings?
