Star: function of clamp at the floor tom shell?

Hello,

I just caught a Star kit with a mysterious metal plate at the side of the shell from the floor tom (see pic).

Although I know some things about Star ;)

this came up for the first time: is it a slip-on holder clamp for a cowbell or splash cymbal ?

Has anyone a pic of the attachment part?

My search in the vintage Tama catalogues hasn't been successful ...

Thanks for clearing it up in advance.

Cheers, Ralf

That`s not chromed like the rest, I`d say it is aftermarket. Things like those hold anything from sheet music, mics, tuning keys, stick cups, ect. ect.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

I know far less about Stars than you do, my friend but, I've never seen a factory accessory like that. I would think that it definitely is not original.

Hello,

Thanks so far. I've found a 'cymbal holder', although dedicated to the hoop of the tom, in the latest Star catalogue (namely the one of 1972), which seems to be mounted a little bit deeper to the shell. See pics of the 'no. 615' cymbal holder. Could this be the usage?

Cheers, Ralf

Looks like a Ludwig Concert Tom/Timbale mount to me.

Looks like a Ludwig Concert Tom/Timbale mount to me.

+1 with this description. I have one of these mounts and it is a Ludwig. One can only guess as to why it was installed on the floor tom!

Very interesting.

At first glance, I thought it was a Ludwig type "clip" mount that was for concert toms where the tom slides on and over the two "grooves" from the top.

Looking at the inside piece makes me wonder though. I see a screw at the bottom. which may stick out an prevent a tom from sliding on to it. It also appears as if the screw is holding a thin metal piece inside the two "grooves". Almost looks like the spacer part on a Speed King Pedal that goes at the top of the foot board where the hook attaches it to the main part of the pedal.

Very strange. Quite a mystery, there Ralf.
