Star Fibre Gold snare

Loading...

Next up is a 3 ply Star snare in the hard to find Fibre Gold wrap. It is all there, and complete with 2 extra holes in the strainer area. I did not drill these, but as I have nothing to cover them with, I will just leave them open, unless someone wants them filled with plastic wood.

The wrap has some fade, but it is even , and under the wrap, there is some discoloration. The shell has the original white base coat underneath and has apparently had some mildew or something get under. I am not really going to try to remedy this as the drum will be for sale as soon as I am done with it. As for the hoops, well....it may get new ones as they are not present, or are on some other drum.

I will lacquer it, smooth out the edges, not changing the contour from the original roundover. The reason for this is that the last one, the gorgeous blue sparkle, seen below, is the same shell and sounds amazing now. I kid you not, this is one fine drum and I intend to duplicate it, hopefully. The only thing I can see that will make a difference will be the difference in the number of lugs. This one is a 6 lugger where the blue one is an 8. And yes, I know...it has snare-sides top-side. It just sometimes happens we only have what we have.

This one is going to look very nice when it's finished! I dont think I would care for an entire set in that wrap, but as a stand alone snare it will look very cool.

I wouldn't worry about the extra holes near the strainer. They look small and will probably be covered up by the strainer once it's attached (are you using the original in the pic or are you going to go with a replacement?)

Where do you get all of these? Donations? if not, you must be spending an Andrew Jackson every other day! Are you keeping track of the sheer numbers of restorations you're doing? you should be!

This one was a donation. I know, a donor, but you know, for every few, I have to replenish the funds. I can't really afford to give away everything I get, and I do buy more than are donated, by a long shot. I got 4 or 5 in one box, and three of them were trash, but had good lugs and have proved to be good for making videos. This one and the blue sparkle that is above were the two best ones in the bunch. the blue will stay in the fold.Actually, I have had many of these for a while, but just running out of things to do so I get these out and go after them.

I said something about the silver Aria the other day not having a good quality about it and I found out why tonite...The snare-side was an Ambassador res, not a snare side at all...DOH! So, switched it out and it tuned right up, like a snare, not a tom with wires on it.

I sold a snare this week and the kid is a jazz pianist. He loves the blue jungle kit and it is now going to a new home, all I have to do is build a cradle for the bass and off it goes. It's a bit tippy the way it is, so I will remove one set of legs and build a cradle for the res side. Then his bass player wants a kit, so I get to sit with him a minute and figure his needs out so I can build him a nice little kit. I like it.

John, did you change out the bolts on the strainer (blue snare, not the mounting bolts)? I have the same strainer on my snare and the two bolts on the lever don`t seem correct. But I`m not sure what came with it. Could use your help. Thank you, Tommy

Sorry Tommy, just saw this. Those look like the correct bolts. It is a very simple device and when properly tuned is a great strainer. The mounting bolts I used are not original. I had to use some stove bolts from Harbor Frieght. I picked up an assortment box and those seemed to match the other bolt and I used those just to look good.
