Star Factory Lug Dampers?

Loading...

Dear Fellow members,

I recently obtained another chrome Star eight lug snare. The one I use to gig is around 1972. It has a locking mechanism on the strainer. This one doesn't...exactly like my mid-sixties Supremes. I'm assuming the Star is about the same era. The strange thing is: each lug spring is wrapped in felt and the surface of the bottom of each lug had sponge inserts. I know that to record, such rattle preventing precautions were necessary. What I need help with is did somebody do this to record or did the factory for some reason, produce these lugs? I just can't picture the Star manufacturers going to the trouble and expense. I must admit that whoever did the job on each lug was VERY meticulous! The job is immaculate!

Thanks.

Brian

A few questions are the lugs copys of the Rogers B&B lugs? On the lugs screw holes are they bent over like a tab?..St. George made by Star mid 60s used these lugs i have alos seen these on Star made drums..These lugs are factory made like that by a machine...Mr.Cooper told me this about these lugs many years ago he went to the Star factory in the late 60s...Mikey

Hi, Mikey!

Thanks for the information. I didn't realize that Star did this. These are definitely Star lugs but, I had no idea that the factory used such a process. Again, I amazed by your expertise! Thanks again.

Hi Brian,

I don't know whether Star made these felt additions, or whether someone done this lateron.

One of my Star snare also had felts inside (in white/ light brownish colour), done also in a nearly perfect shape, so that I was forced to think it was done ex works. Can you make a pic of it, please?

But, as I used to play my (new bought) Royal Star drumset in the 70s mainly as 'concert toms' (which was uptodate then  ), I stored the unmounted lugs and screws careful separately. From what I remember, the lugs did NOT contain any damping materials, when I took them of. So I'm more convinced to say: Star did not place any felts inside of the lugs originally.

Hi, Ralf!

Thanks for the input. This old computer prevents me from sending pictures. I placed the lugs back on yesterday but, this is what they looked like: each spring was carefully wrapped with a thin piece of purple felt around the middle (each meticulously placed), covering each spring and conforming exactly to the inner shape of the lug, a thin piece of olive green sponge was used. Again, these sponge pieces were cut exactly. I have a set of Stars from 1972 as you know. The strainer has a locking mechanism on the snare. This strainer doesn't ,which leads me to believe that it is an older set. My '72 Stars do not have any such dampers. They never did.I bought them from the first owner. If someone did this by hand, he did a fantastic job. I also value Mikey's opinion . Any more ideas, Ralf? Thanks.

Hi Brian,

I think that if someone wants to get rid of that little rattling noise, he generally is a bit picky and maybe is therefore also giving his best with the dampening (who is willing to disassemble completely a drum for a 2nd time, because one of the felts is not being placed in correctly and the rattling is still on? - Me definitely not!).

Brian, in my experience, none of the old stencil drums had factory installed muffling for the lug springs. Does the drum seem like it was well played? (ie, scrtaches, signs of having been moved around a lot, rust, worn heads/replacement heads?) If that is the case, then I would have to assume the lug muffling was something done by a former owner. If the drum looks pristine, with the original heads, snare wires, etc, then it might be possible that it was a factory job, but I do think it was more likely done by a previous owner.

As for the strainer with the locking mechanism, I've never seen that either. If you cant post pics of your own, maybe you can post a link to another pic of the forum or the web. Is there anything like it in this thread?

Hi, cn679!

Thank you very much for your insights. I truly appreciate the input. Yes, when I obtained the snare, it was certainly not pristine! The heads were scuffed and very well used, there was some surface rust which I was able to eliminate, it was missing a tone control and a butt plate and, there were two types of tension rods, both the fine metric thread luckily. The strainer is identical to my Supreme strainer ( mid-sixties). The same strainer is pictured on the second blue Star that you sent pictures of. Thanks. I bought my first Star snare as part of a four piece set from the original owner. He told me that nothing had been replaced. I believe him. Even the original heads with the Star insignia were present on all of the drums. Where the lever of the strainer slides forward for the snare sound, it is indented toward the drum thus allowing the lever to lock into place. Move the lever back to the tom position and it unlocks. I have since obtained the correct tone control and just today, the butt plate. I love these old Stars! I play with my first set with the addition of another 13 inch tom and a Star coctail which I use as a second floor. I am even restoring a set of Star Bongos!

Thanks again for your expertise! Plese write back if you want to talk about these old drums! Thanks again!
