Star Drum

I picked this up today for $10. It's a solid little drum. Wondering if it's the "Star" drums that became Tama in 1974?

Does anyone recognize this drum? Part of a set of bongos maybe?

There is one small hole in the shell.......thinking a mount was there at one time.

I took this natural hide head off the drum and it wasn't 'tucked' as far as tucking goes.....it was sown in place with bits of string around what you usually see in a tambourine - a thin wire hoop. Sorry about the poor photo.

Kona,Yes it's part of a 2 set of bongo's looks like the bigger one of the set.Is the head like 7" across? If so you are missing the 6" headed one..Your bongo i would say is from the mid-60's up to the very late 60's.Is it painted red on the inside of the shell? That would date the drum mid-60's if no paint then late 60's..The hold on the shell is for a mount that would have been a piece of wood shaped like a "U" at the ends to rest next to the bongo's also that piece of wood would have matched the bongo's in color..Mikey

As Mikey has said, it looks like half of a set of bongos similar to these. These have red painted interiors and the same heads as your one drum has.

Mikey - There probably isn't much hope in finding the other drum. I'll probably tuck a new head and wood hoop on it - it may be a nice little accent drum.

Yes - mine has Red paint inside the shell.

The bongos in your photo have a different badge I see. And the heads seem to have a 'real' drum hoop. Whereas mine has this 'stringed' natural hide with the tambourine-type hoop.

I'm always picking up these cheap drums - I don't know why. And my wife is enabling me haha. She was at a secondhand store looking for some fireplace items and told me 'Gary - there's some Gretsch drum heads in the store.' We went by there quickly so I could look and she said 'oh - by the way - there's a drum in there too.' I got 5 heads and the drum for $23........you can't NOT buy themDOH.

HAHA.....Ya.....and it gets worse. I'm bidding on some drums now and the auction has 6 days left......I bid so high no one will stay in there.....I hope....nuts hu. In the back of my mind though I hope someone tops me because I really don't need another drum. But....this one is so cool and it speaks me.....or so the unresponsible side of my personality keeps whispering in my ear

Yep. Mikey is 100% on! I have a pair of Star bongos with red interiors and the oval Star badge. They are done in gold glitter.Stitching? Yes. Real hoops? Yes, again.Calfskin too. Check them out under Image Gallery under Star Set , Turquoise (or something like that).

There seems be a lot of Star badges from this period. I think the heads are the same just looks like the wire on yours has become exposed

I think we are like a lot on here - can't let a good or interesting drum pass by. I mean i'm hardly likely to use these bongos, just had to have themYes Sir

Tucked a new LP bongo head tonight. It was tricky with the thin wire hoop and the thicker lp hide. You can't tell from this photo but the head is a lot thicker than the original. The original is more like a tamborine head. The one here is the ones I use on my Valje bongos.

I may have to do some more work on it because I didn't sew the ends to the thin metal flesh-hoop like the original one.

There is a hole in the shell - where the bridge-mount used to be. I will find a way to mount it (Gibraltar hardware maybe?) and use it as an accent drum. Will trim the excess hide of course. Usually that's done when the hide is still wet but in this case it was not an option because of the way the hide was just resting against the metal flesh-hoop. Had to wait for it to dry before removing the counter hoop otherwise the hide would slip through. Technical stuff haha. Nice little drum for $10 though.

Oh - yes - I found this matching Slingy ft yesterday on eBaY. Didn't buy it though........just put the photo up to show the finish - Red Tiger Pearl (zwhat it says on the eBay ad). Looks like a perfect match.
