Welcome Lucas. Nice kit. I'm not sure that the Snare is a Pearl President. I think it's just a President which was a stencil brand (I've seen President Guitars, too)

How did you polish up the 12" shell? Novus is the best product I have found and you can buy it on Trademe http://www.trademe.co.nz/gaming/arcade-pinball-machines/other/auction-484646132.htm It really does an amazing job of the plastic wraps. I use the No.2 grade for most things.

Make sure you post pics of the kit when you're finished.

Have you imported from the USA before? (which I assume is where Mikey is?)

To polish the shells I used a damp cloth first to remove mostly dust.

Then Mothers Carnauba Cleaner Wax (Car wax) applied with Stockinette (aka Mutton Cloth ... now there's a kiwi term Yes Sir

A light buff on most of it and a more solid buff on the dirty/rusty bits. Seemed to get rid of the gunk.

I wasn't aware of the Novus product. Thanks for that link.

To clean the chrome-ware it was a wash in the sink with detergent. Dried.

Then used Autosol and stockinette. Some of the worst just got an initial dunk in the Autosol and left for a bit then rubbed and buffed with a separate cloth. I wasn't sure whether to go to 0000 steel wool on the rough bits or not so didn't.

The interior silver sealer paint was pretty dirty with finger prints so I bit the bullet and stripped it all off.

40 Grit onto 60 Grit, 80 Grit, 120, 180, 220 grit.

Followed by 2 coats of Briwax Danish Oil over 24 hours.

Then one good thick coat of Acorn Beeswax Polish to seal in the flavour.

Only managed to get the 12" Tom completed.

13" is stripped of the sealer to 60 grit only so far.

You're onto it.

The Novus polish has a mild abrasive quality, a bit like a cutting compound, and takes out the fine scratches. The end result is usually brilliant. I then finish with an automotive wax.

I use Autosol too. It seems pretty good.

I've never removed the sealer from the inside of the shells. I know what you mean as I've restored a couple of similar Star kits. They've usually been quite clean inside though.

As far as importing goes, it's easy. There is no duty on musical instruments and GST is only charged on values (including shipping) over about $400. Shipping is the biggest cost but on small parts like lugs etc, the cost is pretty reasonable.

I would have left the silver sealer on the inside if I could have cleaned it up enough. I tried a few cleaners but it looked like grease/oil and i didnt want to get solvents anywhere near this kit.

The wrap is actually pretty good after a good clean and polish.

When Im further through the kit I will drag it out in the sun on a good day for a better pic.

Nice work. Yep, I've seen a couple on here http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=28174&highlight=fantasia but I've never seen one in NZ before. Mind you, the strangest things show up in these parts.

So do you have 1 BD hoop with the Fantasia inlay? You could get a copy shop to make up a copy of the wrap and make another inlay and put it on another hoop. Definitely don't get rid of it.

That kit is slightly different in its rack tom mounts and tom tension rods and lugs obviously.

I think that was the point that Mike was making. My particular model with its hardware the way it is was rare.

So yeah I like the idea about the bass drum hoops. Im also thinking that getting two brand new chrome over steel hoops wouldnt look out of place. Much like those of us who add a chrome snare when the original isnt with a kit. Wont be getting rid of the original in any case.

You wouldnt happen to have any older tom hoops would you?

12" 6 hole, 13' 6 hole and 16" 8 hole is what I need. I could order standard Taiwanese versions but if you had some more "vintage" versions I would be keen to buy them.

Yep, there's a Star kit more like yours further down the thread as well as a link to a catalogue.

The only spare hoops i have are pretty rough. I have just bought some new 12" ones for the Yamaha kit that look fine and were only $15 from Hawkes bay agencies (order them through your local music shop). I may have a spare plastic 20" BD hoop if you need one though.

i thought you were going to send the pics to me. none the less i don't have the claws and t's in your pic.

the claws in your pic don't look that old. they look like modern claws i have and that can be bought at retail. atleast over here anyway. perhaps that claw has been used on many kit thru the years, i don't know.

as for my t-rods, the t's i have fit my lugs. again, the t's are a larger diameter and fit the lugs i have. hopefully yours are the same as well.

i have 2 sets:

- the set of 8 looks like (to me) what you have (i may only have 4, need to check)

- the set of 16 look just like the other 8.

the difference between the 2 is that the set of 8 have a bit of a flat face were the t-rod goes into, while the set of 16 are alittle more rounded on top.

and other than the minor differences in the interior of the lug (one must be a older version than the other) they look almost the same.
