Spitfire (12-lugger-80s)

Loading...

This is a Slingerland snare, model "Spitfire", size 6.5" by 14" with black laquered 5-ply maple shell. It is a 12-lugger and has a slap-shot strainer, extended snare wires and steel sticksavers. Walking

Here is a recent video with my spitfire from 1982!

This is my fourth "Spitfire" that I'm displaying and it sounds like this!

and here is another "Spitfire Vid".

I bought this snare on ebay recently from a guy who had refurbished its original black laquer. He replaced the original 4 eyelets with DW ones. I don't want to change them so I let it be instead.

enjoy,

Fred

Thanks for looking, and I'm so glad because the slap-shot strainer works like a dream. No damaged plastic part inside the strainer : )

I'm guessing that's a late 90's spitfire made by Gibson. I think Fred's is a late 70's.

Great looking snare Fred Cool1

/QUOTE] Hi there,

My black spitfire snare is from 1982. Here is the Slingerland catalogue, which explains that it's from the 200-series of spitfires.

Pic 1. The black is "no 202".Jumping2

Pic 2. All my four "spitfires", where the white is "no 201" (the two 5" x 14" in the middle are brass spitfires from 1979 with TDR-strainers),all were manufactured in the US between 1979-85 in Chicago.

Louie Bellson was the endorser of Slingerland's first "Spitfire" in 1979!

Thanks for watching,

Fred

Hi again, regarding the "Tre Cool" signature snare that you found on ebay. I found some interesting information by a guy speaking about this signature kit. Here:

"Doesn't Tre Cool play Slingerland? I know he used to....

Stranjluv101

I thought he was playing Leedy now.

The low end Taiwan kits and the Studio King Keller shell kits from the mid 1990's to present were made by Gibson. Prior to that, they were briefly built and distributed by Hohner/HSS. Some of the HSS kits are exceptional, but most were cheap. Before that, Gretsch was the caretaker of Slingerland. If you ever visit the Gretsch warehouse, you'll see a lot of droolworthy vintage Slingerland drums, still in their original boxes, untouched since the day they were made.

If you're looking for a good set of vintage drums for not a lot of dough, look for drums with the black and silver oval badge that says "Niles, IL"Walking

Fred here again. My advice is, if you want to spend 400 dollars on a "Slingerland" snare, then buy a TDR 10-lug snare from the 70s (Buddy Rich) or Louie Bellson snares like my "Spitfires" (new video here!)

By the way, I have a 5th "Spitfire" NOS brass, size 5" by 14", 1979 (Louie Bellson) model if someone wants to buy? Contact me for offer, (same copper color as pictured in my blue sofa!)

Location of drum is in New York!

/Good Luck!
