Sound King vs. Super Sound King?

Loading...

I have a couple of nice Sound Kings and have noticed in catalogs that there is also a "Super" SK.

For collectability and for playing, is the Super SK a better drum? Is the value of a Super SK more than that of a regular SK or, was it just one of those models that was sold but never became very popular?

I know there were different versions, earlier strainers a bit different than later ones, not sure if one more valuable than the other or just doesn't make a difference. If you do get one, are parts hard to come by or near impossible to get...other than snare wires?

I don't ever see anyone discussing this snare, so the reason for the question is whether I should put this snare on my "radar"?

Thanks very much.

I have a 60s model with the 1st strainer design... It is my favorite metal shelled snare no doubt.

You have a sound king so you are familiar with the tone on that shell. The Super SK just gives you more options to tweak the snare sounds.

As for value etc... I wouldn't trade mine for really anything but it holds a lot of sentimental value being it was my first vintage snare. I'll let the others take that.

Thanks MD. I just wonder about getting parts if they are needed and, if the value is not that much, whether it is just better to stay with a mind SK!

While I don't really do much buying and selling, I always like to make sure that what i do buy has some collector value in case I need to sell. Sometimes, I get in the mood to have something else and usually sell off one of my (non-favorites) to get the cash to buy it.

If Super SK's are not really in demand much and do not carry good resale value, then I will focus on something else. For me, if not very popular, then the chance of finding replacement parts for something rusty or broken would be highly unlikely...then stuck with an unfinished drum! :(
