Those ARE great shells! I can't wait to see how they turn out. I'll bet they are going to sound fantastic!

With Christmas coming I've had no time to update on the thread.

SO!

So far I've got the bass drum underway and kiss my ass the drum is coming into round nicely and the dents are nearly gone. The turnbuckle and straps on the outside are pictured.

I've bought two really nice toms (floor and ride) 16" and 13" because they had all the hardware (not too bad shape). I need to get rid of that wrap which I've never done before. I read that if you leave them out in the cold over night they are easier to get off. The good news is that the tom and small tom shells are in AMAZING shape and I can't wait to get going on veneering. I'm continuing to pick up parts and don't have a snare for it yet.

Nice work on the bass. Those two tom shells are awesome European Beech, ultra thin but such dense wood. No wonder Sonor vintage has such great full sound. Can't wait to see the veneered end result.

Have a new born pushes things back a bit...it's been awhile since the last update. baby crawl2

I've picked up a matching snare, treated the shells and I'm almost ready to veneer.

I bought a really messed up 20" bass drum and I've taken a dremel tool to it for needed spare chips of wood to fill cracks and rips when the wrap to up when I removed. I will also be cutting out spur support slabs and one for the bd mount. This is not true to design but after fixing out of roundness and dents, I don't want the weight of the bd mount to sink down. (Should I leave it alone?).

The shells still have really thin glue remnants on them. The shells are completely smooth but will I have problems with gluing the veneer on?

Good to see you posting again on this project.

Its not out of character to install spur or tom mount support slabs. The beech shell is so thin that if you don't, it will indent as you say. Sonor uses wood support slabs to do the reinforcing so no worries. Is your 20" "messed up" drum a Sonor beech shell?

The messed up shell is a teardrop shell. I bought it so the wood supports cut outs would match both wood and shell size. The cymbal mount and both spurs will have the supports glued there but do you think I should do one for the bd mount (has the 4 carriage bolts attached to the large mount bracket thing.

Do you think I'm cool with the glue residue or should I continue to sand till I get all bare wood on the small tom, floor and probably snare?

My only concern right now is the veneer not taking to the shell due to the glue or is it a non issue?

Moving along nicely here.

I've prepped all the shells and removed the epoxy residue.

I used acetone to loosen up the expoxy and then found that my dremel tool w/wire brush like attachment sort of whipped the epoxy up from the grain. Once all "whipped" up, I did another layer of acetone to break it up further and scraping it off was much easier. The black stuff is the whipped up expoxy and I let the dremel do the work. The scraping took more wood off then the dremel did.

SO! shells are prepped, veneer is cut to size, got my bottle of heat lock glue from storage and it is all gummed up. F%$K! Project will have to wait a week till the heat lock comes in. Moving along though!

Veneering is DONE...I'm happy with it.

I've bought a couple of 20" maple hoops from Precision and pre-treated them and stained them. I was going to veneer strips on top but my wife thinks they would just look cool stained. The stain came out very good as I was worried about blotching.

Next step is to Tung Oil a thousand times and semi chrome the hardware. Rims are not in good shape but you can't have it all.

More to come.

Nice work on the veneering. About 3 coats of Tung oil will do the trick.

I think that veneer is called "Zebra Wood"?
