From Magnus_N

Jack Dejohnette, for one, played Phonics, and with Miles Davis, too. Also, the Phonic bop kits are thought to be the bee's knees in jazz drums by some. Phonics are heavy, but definitely well suited for jazz. They are loud (project well), so you need to keep that in mind./Magnus

Good points.

I`ve never even heard a Phonic BD in person that was smaller than a 22. If their are any vintage Phonic 20`s or 18`s in the States,...I`ll never get one or hear one.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

As a Phonics player since 1985, I second everything Magnus has said. Mine is c.1978 'Natural Beech'.

It was a consignment sale @ $600. The 13x9 tom is a recent acquisition which I couldn't resist, though it's rarely used.

I haven't kept tabs on valuations so I'm pleased to learn of the recent ebay sale of an 18 Phonics b.d. for $799... not that I would dream of selling my set.

The snare in the pic is a 2002 Phonics reissue rosewood.
