Sonor Pancake

Loading...

I'm selling this Sonor Pancake because I've had it for quite a while and never used it.

I'm listing it in the "For Sale" thread, but I wanted to ask if anyone knew the age of this drum.

There is no badge, no ID marks, but I've posted pics of the throw off and adjustable butt-plate.

The wrap has yellowed a bit to a "Marlboro smoker's teeth" color, which I always like, but others may not.

The original Sonor snares were bent up and in terrible shape. They'd be better off with some PureSound snares anyway.

Any info would help.

Thanks,

Jeremy

Can't tell you the age, but in that condition, you will likely draw 300-500. I know that is a big gulf, but those command top dollar, especially in good shape. Are the lugs solid and not stripped out? That is one of the big deals with these. If in really good condition, top dollar! Probably late 50-mid 60s.

I would love to have one of these. I have bid on several and missed all of them.

Hi Jonnistix,

Thanks for the info. Several years ago I really wanted one and thought it would work for a few specific situations - but truthfully, I just found a different drum that worked better. Sadly, the pancake sat in a corner being lonely.

I do remember being surprised at the initial price-tag, biting the bullet and doing it anyway.

The tension rods are in great shape. No stripping or problems like the close cousin "Rogers Satellite drum".

In full disclosure, in the for-sale section leedybdp reminded me that the rods can be about 1/4" too long. Depending on how tight you want the heads, the bottom t-rods have a possibility of nudging up against the top hoop, and vice-versa. Had I used the drum regularly, I would have just taken it to a machinist that does odd jobs for me once in a while and had him lop off about 1/4"-3/8" and re-tap/die the rods.

Right now the heads are tuned up, but not marching-snare-drum-tight, and they are clear of the neighboring hoops.

Just food for thought.

Wow Oddball,

Thanks for the info. Upon closer inspection, based on the throw off, I think it's actually a 1963-64.

http://sonormuseum.com/1963-64/index.html

Apparently it was 154 Deutschmarks at the time. That's about $39 back when Coltrane "Live at Birdland" was out.

Thanks for posting the sonor catalog. That's kind of cool knowing this info now. Kind of makes me want to keep it, but I know it would never get played.

That is just one cool drum. I truly wish I had a couple extra bucks, I'd buy it just to have it with my WMP kit, even though mine is only an MIJ kit, it would still look great sitting next to it as a side snare. Those snares sound amazing, in the right context. Sonor and Rogers built those for a reason, and wish I knew what it was. Had to be artist specific. Where else would they have come up with that idea?
