Sonor D454 Help ???

Loading...

Hi all,

I'm hoping to get some help on this Sonor D454 I've had for about 20 years. It was left in my driveway with some other CB700 shells and I've never done anything with it until recently. I gave it a full disassembly and cleaning and it came out pretty nice. I do want to sell it and there isn't much to go on to determine an asking price. I know this isn't a high end holy grail by any means but was hoping I could get some info on its history and today's value. I did check out the Sonor Museum and got an approximate age for it but through deep google searches there isn't much to go on. It's missing the original muffler. It had an MIJ muffler on there that was probably for a 6.5 X 14 so I just left it off since the knob was crooked unless the muffler was about an inch above the bearing edge. There is a t-bolt for the butt side snare tensioner where I believe a knob should be. I also think it's missing a band spring that goes over the butt side tensioner. Any help and info would be greatly appreciated. It's pretty obvious but here is a before pic and some after pics. I did learn the hard way that you shouldn't try to clean the Sonor stickers. I ruined one and almost ruined the other.

It`s a good sounding drum. It came with the Champion series but could be bought alone. When Sonor was selling them back in the early 70`s they sold for about $130 new. Take the missing parts and determine what it would cost to get them and subtract that from it`s original value.

If you chose to replace everything and looking as good as it does,.. start with $200.

It`s not an easy drum to find for sale in the US !!

Oh,..Sonor will never make seamless Ferro-manganese snares and hoops again,...your snare is all ferro.

Thank you Oddball, good information. I was kind of guessing it's value would be in the same ballpark as an Acrolite but this drum is certainly a lot more beefy weighing in at around 8 lbs. Does anyone know of any sources to find these parts? Ebay has nothing at the moment.

This is the correct Butt end, and the damper top hole has been widened, the smaller screw goes on the top. The original muffler will have to be improvised to mount correctly !!

Yes, referred to those same pictures. The holes for the muffler, from what I can tell, have not been tampered with. The muffler that was in there was added by someone previous to my possession but I think the holes are good. The butt end of the strainer is a little bit different than the one on the example you posted. The snare string ties off on it in the same way as the throw off side so there's no screws and clamp bar there.

Aahhh.... Gotcha!Yes Sir. Yes the holes got a little bit bent from the rigging that was on there but it doesn't appear to be any bogus mods to them.

Again, I appreciate the help.

Oh just to add, one and only one lug mounting screw and washer was missing but replaced with something that works and threads are correct.
