Recently picked up a D-424 ("Ferro-manganese") 60s sonor metal snare and really dig it. Unique, barking sound, halfway between a piccolo and a 5". Every so often I see the wood shell 5" Teardrop era snares (D-471) pop up and was curious about their sound and if anyone has any feedback. For what it's worth, Bernard Purdie said that's the snare he played on his Soul Drums LP, but if anyone has personal feedback on how they compare to other wood shell 5" snares of that era (H. Ace, Jazzfest, 4157, Powertone, Royal Ace, etc.) it'd be helpful. I'm assuming they're Beech and either 3 or 6 ply? Thanks.
