Any suggestions for heads for the mounted and floor toms of my early-70s Sonor Champions? They are new to me and have G1 Evans - pretty short sustain but decent fundamental tone - Im not a sustain junky but it could be more - I think the champion mounting system and all that hardware is having an impact as well on sustain, but I actually like the warm tone of the G1s, but a little more sustain and openness would be nice - input very appreciated from any sonor experts with champs experience! thanks!!!

I'd
-put the toms on stands,
-or put rubber between wood and bracket,
-or use RIMMS (or any other),
-or put those special rubbers under the floor tom legs (better use of money than buying a new floortom head probably),
and then try again
In my experience there's little difference between for example G1 or ambassadors, sustain-wise. G1 works very well normally.
If nothing helps: thinner heads/clear heads? Clear diplomat?

Have you fiddled around with tunings? Like top and bottom tuned the same?

Best way on my set is Ambassador coated on the batter and Remo CS as Resohead, and tune booth to the same pitch. You get the maximum on sustain, wich is with the round edges not a lot....but for me this works great!

The Champions should be fine with Ambys top and bottom, maybe clear ones on the bottom. Agree it's probably the mounting that chokes them.
I'm going to try a CS dot on the bottom (different drums), but in my experience, a thinner head on th ebottom makes more sense. If you have a drum that is a bit boxy, a Diplomat instead of an Ambassador opens it up. Might be because I tune quite high and play rather quietly most of the time.
