Some Love For Ludwig Pre-Serial COB's

Loading...

Damn, I remember when COB's were going for a grand or more regularly. Not that long ago really. The good news is; Ludwig hasn't made any more super Ludwig's since 1963. The value will go back to where it was once the economy starts to move again. All markets are cyclical in nature. What goes down... must come up! lol

Nothing else I own, wood or metal, comes close. Those old pre-serial COB's are simply the best sounding snare drums ever made by anyone.

I agree 100%. My luddy Pre-serial COB has what appears to be the original bottom head and wires. I don't know if it makes any difference, but this drum is spectacular. A tight roll sounds like tearing a long sheet of thin paper- best way I know how to describe it. No other drum sounds quite like it.

Forgive my ignorance on the subject but did Ludwig do a later reissue of this snare or something like it? Reason I ask when I was at GC last week I was looking at the snares. And saw a newer Ludwig that looked alot like those. I think it was COS and it had a plastic gasket behind the lugs. Not postive on COS as it was up on the top rack out of reach. Looked to be at least 6" depth. And looked very new. I didn't ask about it or the price. Just curious.

Fer - The pre-serial snare drums we're discussing were (I believe) the last of the Super Ludwig shells that they had in stock. The last of these brass shell, crimped beds snare drums rolled off the assembly line in 1963. The drum you saw was likely a chrome over steel. The pre-serial chrome over brass snare drum is an entirely different animal.

Thanks John. Yes I'm sure it can no way compare to the older stuff. Next time I'm there I'll take a closer look if I see it. I figured it was much newer in fact it looked almost brand new. That's why I asked if they did newer reissues of the older style snares. I'm still a old newbie and thanks for your explanation!

Fer - That's one of the kickers with the COB's... no pitting! Many of the examples you'll see, unless they've been mistreated, still look shiny new. Most of the photos of the COB's posted in this thread share that in common, they all look like they were made yesterday. Very cool sounding snare drum, if you ever get the chance to try one out... go for it. Don't just tap it and walk away, sit down and play it. You'll be amazed at what comes back at you.
