So much for the ludwig p-88

Haven't posted in a while but i thought i'd post something about the new Ludwig P-88 throw of and butt plate. I was really excited about the new offer and to get a couple of sets to upgrade my Supra and Acro, but it looks like Ludwig has once again made an absolutely silly mistake of NOT accommodating the hole spacing for the P-32 butt plate, yet they sell them as a set so you can "upgrade". WHY ? on God's green earth would they NOT upgrade the butt as well ? Insane. I contacted Dave's Drum Shop in Ottawa Canada since they got them first, and he told me they don't fit, but may fit the more recent diecast butt plate.

Now if you buy the set and want to install the new butt plate that comes as a set, you have to drill holes into the drum shell. Unless you plan on keeping the drum for life and don't mind drilling holes, you're all set.

If not, then you're paying over $60 for the throw and have a useless, unusable butt plate. I don't know if i will buy them and drill holes into my shells, but if the snares get used more often, (which they're not at this point in time) then i'll consider picking up a set. Curious to hear thoughts on this. Ludwig once again, not thinking outside the box..

cheers,

Rob

Is that the new butt plate that just came out. The original design was supposed to replace either the P-32 or the cast behemoth they've been using. The casting has spots with spacing for the screws of either. But after the design was completed they discovered that the holes for the P-32 would not line up properly for all drum shells (thin metal vs. fat wood) so rather than risk many buyers not being able to use it they opted to not tap that set of holes and make it officially only a replacement for the cast version.

At least that's what I read over on the DFO forum.

K.O - I believe it may be the case. Dave from Dave's Drum Shop mentioned in his email that he's supposed to receive more stock, but i don't know if that means a newer version or that if he's out of stock. I'm assuming it's the latter, because this is a brand new P-88 that came out for NAMM 2018, so i don't think there are two versions for upgrade.

Whatever the case, i'm not budging on my snares until Ludwig finally fixes this ridiculous problem. I'm not even using vintage gear anymore and haven't used my snares in almost a year. I may even consider just keeping the Acrolite, as i prefer it to the Supraphonic, and because it's also dated 3 months and few wks shy of my birth date.

Cheers,

Rob

Just looked it up online.

Bummer. The good thing about the P-32 and other similar butt plates was that you could always bend it a little bit into position if the holes didn't quite line up.

Yeah, it is a bummer. You'd think Ludwig would even at least make a diecast version of the original P-32 with drum key bolts, but no, not even that. Ludwig's engineering department needs an overhaul. Josh Allen (former engineer for Ludwig) told me in an email last year that they'll be working on a replacement for the P-32 in the future, and i'm curious to see what they come up with. No doubt, it will be cleverly made and durable..

Cheers,

Rob
