I needed a little cash, so I figure, you know, I can always replace that one. Afterall, they are always available. Anyway, I go to the guys house, he is a really cool young, hip player. After trading stories, and having a good old time, we got down to biz. First though, I have to say this. Back in July, when I first bought my sons' kit, It was a Sunday and the drum shop was closed. I put out an urgent message on C/L for a replacement snare side head. This guy answers the ad, and we meet and he hands me a brand new Evans snare, Hazy 200. Perfect.
Well, I put out the ad for the Acro, and this guy answers, it turns out the same guy. I go out to his place and do the deal. He tells me, more confesses, that he really doesn't know how the tune a snare, so I direct him to Bob Gatzen on youtube. The Acrolite has a new factory head, and I had just finished a top notch tuning on it, it sounded like an Acrolite is supposed to sound, that crackity pop.
So after we talk and get down to it, I walk away with 75 cash, 3 Wuhan splashes, 8-10-12, and a 20 Sabian ProSonix ride, and 2 snares. The snares are, of course, one old Star 5 ply, one I don't have, in sivler spark that has been overlayed with that shelf wrap in red sparkle and a World Max 13" wood, basswood I assume.
The WM 13 sounds like a bad case of a$$ at first. It has an Evans Genera Dry and Evans Genera clear. I get it home, and tear it down, only to see what makes it tick, you know how we are...I'm thinking to myself this is a lost cause, did not do anything to it. At first I put my standard set up on it....ringy ding ding, aring...yuk! So, having nothing else to try, because we all know that a ringy drum only rings worse when tighten up, I tried it anyway. Damned if it didn't tune right up and crackity pop!
The MIJ snare is gonna get a good treatment of stripping to the bare shell. and a wrap of Curly Maple veneer, since I happen to knw where some is...in the drum room...and a new set of Pearl throw/butt like the last one. If this shell sounds half as good as I think it is going to, it will be sooocool. It has a factory round over edge, so it has to be a transition shell, in the later 60s when they were dicking around trying to find a good ply layup to replace the 3 plies....big mistake in my opine.
