So I got to play my old unknown MIJ kit...

and i really like it!

really open, woody sounding kit.

quick decay with a nice tone.

did notice if the floor tom is mounted

directly on the hardwood floor all tone/resonance

is gone. So I stuck a footie sock under each leg,

massive tone, very nice sounding. Same with the little

mounted tom, further it got to the post, less tone

and resonance. Mounted it out pretty far, and that little

guy sings! Used ambassadors on the bottoms and vintage a's

for the batter. bass drum is pretty punchy and quick too, with

that little muffler deal that came new with the kit. Put some

puresound wires on the snare and it sounds nice too!

Do they sound like my late 70s maple Ludwigs? No.

Did I expect them to? Not at all.

They do, however, sound a lot like my clubdates. And they

bop and weave like those old drums too.

They're a quick kit to play, easy to move around the toms,

and easy to kit the whole kit rocking around like a more

well known brand of drums, on a riser, in a certain stadium.

Maybe this is why the prices of these kits are going up.

People have driven the prices of the american kits to

levels most folks(myself included) think is ridiculous.

They sound good, and look the part.

So what if the wood is cheap.

New chinese drums ( i guess the new "mij"

pearl, low-end tama etc) still sound like

crap out of the box.

I got great results with just a cleaning, head changes,

and tuning. Worth the money I paid for an OG kit with

all the OG accessories that came with it new, and some

extra flat base stands, and cymbals? Definitely.

Just my observation of the situation.

Good to hear that you're digging your MIJs (this would be your orange sparkle set, right?) I swear, the best and easiest fix for the floor tom situation you described is a set of the Gibraltar Floating Feet for your FT legs. Cheaper than a new head and probably more effective!

The floor tom on my gold sparkle MIJ set sounded awful with the original feet on the legs. I thought the edges were messed up or the drum was out of round or something, but when I put the Gibraltar Floating Feet on, I was seriously blown away by the great tone and resonance. The original feet are basically only good for keeping the legs from scratching your hardwood floors.

How are your Lido Supremes coming?

Those feet are something i'll have to look into.

The Lido's are just kinda hanging around now. I'm about out

of room the have any more drums. I'll probably get rid of them.

Although i did think a gold sparkle mij double bass kit would look cool...

and i do have the drums to do it...

Heff, if you do decide to unload your Lido Supremes, could I get the first crack at them? I'd love to get them set up and playing (and that wrap is way too cool to link of stripping!)

sure you can!

i really don't want to recover them, since they do have a neato wrap.

but remember, according to others here, mij drums are nothing more than turds only a select few can polish...gotta do hours of work to that loo-anne to make them even remotely playable in your own house, god forbid on a stage!

seriously, if you want them, let me know. I should have all the lugs. I know the the tom mount is missing from the bass drum, and I only have one spur mount. And the reso hoop from the 12", and both hoops from the floor tom. pm me and i can take/send some better pics of bearing edges etc

'60s MIJ drums are not turds to be polished (unlike '60s MIJ guitars). I am now a believer, as I turned out GREAT tones from my "International Bastard Kit" (consisting of G'd knows how old American, '70s and '80s English, and '60s Japanese drums), all due to that floor tom sounding so sweet. The mounted tom sounded great, but I attribute that to it's depth (Premier APK mystery wood). I spent all of two hours on that MIJ Apollo drum, mainly installing modern swivel nuts.

Don't re-wrap that Lido Supreme, PLEASE?!?

Yeah- I'm THAT guy!!!
