Snare wires for an old 13" snare

Hey y'all,

I made a swap, and ended up with this snare drum

The problem is, I can't think of a way to put snare wire on it. 12" and 13: snares won't do... so I guess I need SOME kind of wires...individual wires? Truth is, I want to be able to play this bad dog. It came with individual wires Folded in half through the oval attachment, then secured with the clamp/base plate on the throw off.

How the heck do I make this work? Or is there a specialist to send it to that'll help. JR?

Maybe you can tell...I'm a little lost!

The wires on this look to be original to me. Possibly they are , copper wound on silk? The butt end , that the snares loop through is an original part on other drums, I own or have seen.

A few of my drums have an identical settup( no Ludwigs) . The individual double loop snares are pretensioned and evened by adjusting them in the clamp, at the throwoff. This looks like it has a throwoff but some just had a threaded adjustor.

I bought an old marcher that had a set up on the butt end like that.

The original leather piece had the snare cord threaded through it and secured with just the clamp bar of a more modern butt end.....the mounting ears had been cut off.....

Funky, but it worked with "regular-sized-for-the-drum" modern snare wires.

It's weird...the modern snares don't quite come in contact the head evenly. I'm wondering if there's a source for th original type snare wires.

Cuz -- silly me -- the snare wires it came with were put out for trash pickup....which happened ONE DAY before I disovered the problem with the wires.

This one does have a throw off, and a tension adjustment knob.

Anyone know a source for snare wires that are long enough to use in this setup?

Or (this is pretty frustrating), Is there a pro I can send this to for set-up for a reasonable fee?

Shoot man, I've got some old wire wound on silks if that's what you need........

How many holes in the leather butt piece.......ha !

There are 8 holes in the butt piece.. I have no idea how many strands... or for that matter, how to set it up. Something tells me I can get guidance here.

I'll send a PM with address and $ that you need.

That is SO cool!! This is a very cool old drum, and I'd love to get it into playing condition.

I only took off the old snares because the previous owner thought I could attach modern snares. I evidently didn't know how to make it work. I couldn't set it up -- the 'plate' at the end of the wires kept the wires from laying flat on the reso head. Besides, I always go for 'originality' when I can.
