Snare strings/cords

Just finishing up a refurb of a 60's Acrolite -- turned out really nicely, too IMHO.

But here's the thing: I have NEVER been able to figure out how to mount snare wires with cords. On the Acro, I put a P 83 on it for authenticity, and it naturally has two rows of holes for mounting the snare wire. The other end would accommodate a strap, but my guess is that that would be 'correct' -- I don't know, but with the mid-60's vintage, wouldn't both ends be string?

So... tips?

BTW, the only snares I have to use on this drum at the moment is a set of the Noble and Cooley "cam action' snares -- which I bought many moons ago. Ought to be interesting!
