Hey all.
I've been druming for about 20 yrs- off and on. Right now I'm in a play more and geek out about vintage gear phase. My ear has changed over time and I can now get a sense of snare sounds. It used to only be loud and cracky meant good. It takes time (or at least for me) to distinguish from a Ringo snare sound v. a Levon, v. a Bonham and I love the process.
Anywho. I've bought these snares over the last six months and love them but really want to know what others would put on them for heads as I am very happy with my Ludwig Colliseum but need suggestions for the others. I can't afford calf so it's modern heads.
Here is what I have on these drums. What would you throw on them?
1) Ludwig Colliseum
Top- Evans Reverse Dot
Bottom-Ludwig XTRA thin
*Muffler just kisses the head for a Bonham like slighly choke. -KILLER SOUND.
2) Ludwig Super Sensitive
Top-Remo Coated Ambassador
Bottom-Clear Remo Ambassador.
*I like what I have w/this but I wonder if I can do better.
3) WFL Mahogany 6.5 w/stick choppers.
Top-Vintage Remo Emperer Coated
Bottom-Ambassador Clear.
*I know this drum can sound better than what I have going on with it.
4)1940 Leedy 8x14 Broadway Parallel
Top-Vintage Remo Emperer Coated
Bottom-Ludwig XTRA thin
*I've rigged modern snare on her now and she really has a gorgeous woody quality but I feel like I can do better and wonder if it's the heads.
Any suggestions are really appreciated. Again-I'm looking for what you would throw on there. All bearing edges are looking good and all snares are newish except that super sensitive.
