Small Ones!!!

Does anyone here play rock music and use a small "jazz size"

kit for the ease of moving around and space issues?

What sizes are you using?

I'm using my 59' Ludwig club dates to play Blues gigs. Mic'ed they cut through just fine. "Size" doesn't matter much now-a-days because of mic's and PA's. Set the levels and the volume and go.

9"x13", 12"x15", 12"x20" BD w/14"x5" Jazzfest. Works fine for me. I tune em low and play away. The Band

Too many great drums to list here!

I have a Rogers 20" 12" 14" that I have used for blues classic rock and a variety/dance band, they get a little help with the rock usually a mic inside the kick, and everything else bleeds in enough to get the kit sound to the back of the room. The rogers 20 kick can sound pretty big when tuned for volume and resonation, and the 14 hangs pretty well.If being professionally miced the jazz kits do well with modern PA IMO.And in these days of small stages the space savings with a 20 x 14 kick and 14 ft can really help breathing room wise.

I use a custom made maple kit with a 20" bass drum, 10" tom and 14" tom. The 20" bass will put a hole in your torso at 5 foot. It used to be 18" deep, but I cut it down 4" and it's a killer.

Before this kit I used an old Pearl MIJ 60's kit with 20, 12 and 14. It's waiting for me to clean up the other toms I found for it to make it a double bass kit.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

I play a 12/14/20 Ludwig Downbeat for just about all of my gigs. I've also played a 13/16/18 config for a few gigs...that particular 18" bass drum sounds monstrous, despite it's small size!

I play 20,12,14 in a blues band. Used to play 18,12,14 in the same band. I only own one 22 BD, and it stays at home.

Cool thread! I'm in the process of building a small practice set for myself that I'm calling the "lil' Buddy". It's going to be 20x13 bass, 10x6.5 tom, (2) 14x14 floor toms & 13x6.5 snare. Just using a few shells I had laying around & picked up a couple more on the Bay, finished off with hardware from a wanna-be drum builder who got in over his head. Total cost, $250! Just finishing it a natural, stained wood (sorta dark Mahogany) using a MinWax product & the hardware is brass plated. So far it looks really good, just wanted to see how cheaply I could build a quality kit for the practice room & use up a bunch of stuff that was collecting dust. It'll probably be finished in a few weeks, will post some pics.

Not trying to hijack the thread, I just get excited when talking about drum building! Excited
