Slingy internal mufflers Last viewed: 2 hours ago

I should have taken better before pics. I have 3 internal mufflers to put back on. One each on an 8x12,14x14,16x16. I have 2 with small knurled knobs, and 1 bigger knurled knob.Should i put the bigger on the 16? Or did it go on the snare? Because I put a small one on the snare.I searched the Drum Gallery but couldn't get a close up view.

Hello BigE! Yeah, becomes a real quandary when putting mufflers back on the drums! Unless you took pictures before taking them off the respective drums, it would certainly be difficult to remember what went where! If it were me, I'd put the larger knob with the 16" floor tom. It shouldn't be too difficult to obtain a small knurled knob if you wanted all three to be identical. Post pictures if you can!

Are all the drums the same year?

The small knob would probably go on the older drum if one is older than the rest.

All my sixties and older drums that have mufflers have the small knobs. My '77s including the snare have large knobs.

I agree. Maybe you can find the dates of the drums. I remember the smaller knobs are from older drums.

Yes Kevins is right all 60s slingerland drums had small knobs.Slingerland came out in 1970 with the bigger knob.If i was you check and see if the shells match..Another thing about the mufflers of the 60s the small knob rod is hooked into the metal piece on the muffler.Mufflers with the bigger knob had a rod that was not a hooked end the end piece on the bigger knob is a round piece that would fit into the metal piece of the muffler....Mikey

Thanks guys!! Apparently just the big knob is wrong. The internal parts are all the same. Hooked into the metal.Mikey if you have one let me know. It's not a big deal now but could be later.

All the drums are from the same period I believe. The Grey Agate was discontinued in 70.The wrap matches beautifully on all drums and faded the same.

Actually, I've seen many 1968 drums with the larger knob! Same "J" hook on the inside, just a larger knob. So, it's very possible that the drums came with 2 smaller knobs and one larger one!
